November 25, 2011

"Wielding the Ash, Kicking the Leather, A history of Trim GAA, 1896 to 2006"
Trim GAA will launch their history book "Wielding the Ash, Kicking the Leather, A history of Trim GAA, 1896 to 2006" on Friday, December 2nd at 8PM in the Club GAA Centre.
An open invitation is being extended to everyone to attend this free event. GAA dignitaries, Colm O'Rourke, Nicky English and Ollie Campbell, former Irish Rugby International outhalf as well as many local dignitaries will be in attendance. The launch of the book will be hosted by Brendan Cummins of LMFM and there will be light refreshments and music late into the evening to celebrate this wonderful book.
This book a 350 page hardback colour publication, was wrote and edited by Frank McCann and Seamus Brennan and contains hundreds of photographs taken through eleven decades of Trim GAA activity. There are 17 chapters, each of which is dedicated to particular eras of the club. Each chapter is sub divided into years which will enable the reader to easily zoom into any required date.
The book charts the Club's growth from inception, through the formative years, to the modern day, where an energetic and enthusiastic group carries on the flame first lit by our founders LM Sheridan and Frank Devey over 100 years ago.
This book delves into the reasons behind the establishment of the Club, those responsible for it's formation and all those who have continued to pursue excellence in Gaelic games during the decades since.
There are sections on the growth of football and hurling in the early 1900's, the barren years in the 1920's where both games went into decline, the rise of both codes again in the 1930 s and early 40's, the hugely successful hurling era all through the 1950's, our sole Keegan cup success in 1962, the decline of hurling and the rise of football in the late 1960's and 1970's, the resurgence of hurling in the late 1980's and its continued success to the present day.
The Club minute books have been trawled through, the newspaper and magazine archives raided and many attics, closets and presses in Trim were visited in a bid to dig up photographs. The result was a resounding success with detailed facts and many photographs included in the book which have never been seen before in a public forum.
"Wielding the Ash Kicking the Leather" is a fitting project to mark our eleven decades in existence and the launch night will feature great entertainment for everyone to enjoy.
So, mark the date in your diary - Friday, December 2nd in the GAA Centre. It should be a special night for Trim GAA, and will be a great night for everyone who attends.
The following is an extract from the Book from the year 1916 which explains the jubilations after our first ever Meath Senior Hurling win.………….1916 Trim were fixed to play Dunboyne in the final on January 30th in the Navan Show Grounds. Dunboyne obviously won their objection. Dunsaughlin immediately challenged the winners for a set of medals. This was a day to remember for the club.
The Drogheda Independent report stated: There was general rejoicing at Trim on Sunday night when news was received of the decisive victory of the Trim Hurling and Football club over Dunboyne in the final of the championship . The Trim Brass Band, which accompanied the local hurlers from Navan escorted the victorious team from the Trim Railway Station after the match and played some popular airs. The players were everywhere cordially greeted and congratulated on their well-won victory. They certainly deserved success for their steady work prior to the final contest".
The Meath Chronicle gives a detailed account of this historic game. A fairly large contingent travelled from the County Town, accompanied by their fine brass and reed band. The Dunboyne men yielded up their oft-won title with a grace worthy of the best traditions of the game. The Trim men, like their opponents, are real sports. A prominent member of the Dunboyne team declared after the match that they had never played with a nicer lot of fellows. To the Trim hurlers we offer hearty congratulations on their newly acquired honours…………….
