Seneschalstown 1-18 St. Colmcille’s 2-18

After a titanic back and forth encounter in Donore on Saturday evening, Seneschalstown just came up short in their latest renewal of their modern rivalry with St. Colmcille’s. Meeting for the fifth time in as many years in Senior Championship fare and with both sides having recorded two wins apiece in those games, this game was always going to be nip and tuck with the bookies also unable to separate the sides pre match.

From the team named in the programme, Donie Commons dropped out due to illness with Séimí Byrne replacing him.

After St. Colmcille’s coughed up a couple of early opportunities, Seneschalstown opened the scoring in the second minute when Dylan Keating sliced over off the outside of his left boot. St. Colmcille’s got their opener a minute later before Seneschalstown stretched their legs a bit.

Cathal Hickey got forward to kick a point which was tipped over by the keeper and from the resultant kickout Darren O’Brien set up Alan Mulvany to kick his first point of the hour.

Cathal Hickey then kicked his second when he found space in a central position. The seasiders then enjoyed a purple patch of their own kicking three points on the spin to tie the game up at 0-04 apiece just before the opening quarter drew to a close.

After 16 minutes the games first two point effort cane via the boot of Alan Mulvany. St. Colmcille’s answered with a white flag at the other end but Seneschalstown were about to be handed a major boost. Collie Scanlon did well down the right hand side before finding Darren O’Brien in around the back with a handpass and the wing forward was able to find the net with a good finish after 19 minutes.

The next two points went the way of the Cilles before Cian Commons kicked his first from play after some good build up play from David Hosie’s side. The eventual winners seized the always changing momentum in the run up to half, with Seneschalstown only getting their opener board from a Cian Commons free as St. Colmcille’s registered 1-03 to go in two ahead at the break, 1-10 to 1-08.

The aforementioned momentum immediately swing the Furze men’s way after the half time break. Alan Mulvany immediately got the ball rolling with a two point effort which went as high as it did long before landing over the crossbar. Eamon Finnegan kicked a close range free before Cathal Hickey got into space outside the forty metre arc to slice over Seneschalstown’s third two pointer of the evening after 33 minutes.

When St. Colmcille’s went up the other end they got their first score of the half from a free before things went all wrong from the Seneschalstown kickout. The Cilles picked up the ball and it was eventually played across the square to be palmed in and once again swing the pendulum the way of the Pilltown men.

They added a point to go two in front after 38 minutes before Cian Commons curled over a superb two point effort from play to level things up once again on the forty minute mark.

However St. Colmcille’s would take over for the next twelve minutes as they reeled off five points in a row to move into a strong position with eight minutes to go.

Seneschalstown did give themselves a fighting chance of clawing it back when Commons kicked a two point free and a single point free approaching the end game but as they tried to work a two point effort or a goal, St. Colmcille’s picked off another score ok the counter to seal a three point win.

Seneschalstown will be left to rue a number of chances that got away as they now turn their attention to the Round 2 clash with Ballinabrackey.
