
Simonstown 2nds 2-19 Gaeil Colmcille 2nds 8-13
Looking at the result, you'd be forgiven for thinking this was a routine win for Gaeil Colmcille 2nds over Simonstown 2nds in Boliden Tara Mines Park on Thursday evening but with 15 minutes remaining the hosts led by three points 1-17 to 3-08 and Kells had it all to do. The hosts outscored Simonstown 5-07 to 1-02 to make it nine wins from nine in Division 5.
Kells got the perfect start when Seamus Hannon fisted the ball to the back of the net and after Simonstown responded with a point Gaeil Colmcille found the back of the net again, this time Ryan Farnham pouncing on a loose ball. Both sides traded scores with Charlie Twomey getting Kells point and the visitors had the ball in the Simonstown net again, Brian Hanlon punching to see Kells lead 3-01 to 0-02 and all looked plain sailing. Hannon could have had a second goal but for the Simonstown keeper to make a super save low to his right,
Simonstown hit three scores in a row including one two pointer but two points from Twomey restored a six point lead for Gaeil Colmcille. Simonstown again hit three scores in a row resulting in 0-04 to cut the lead to just two points. Both sides added further points with Farnham adding to his earlier goal but a Simonstown goal late in the half to take the lead for the first time in the match, Ahmed Lawal got Kells back on level terms but two late points from Simonstown saw them lead 1-13 to 3-05 at the break.
Ryan Farnham struck a two pointer at the start of the second half to bring the teams level once again. Kells had a chance for a fourth goal but Eoghan Flynn saw his effort saved by the Simonstown keeper. Simonstown went in front once again but substitute Gary McGovern fisted over the bar to draw the team level. Simonstown took their biggest lead of the game when they hit three unanswered points, a single pointer and a two pointer to go three points clear with a quarter of the game to go.
Cormac O'Reilly was introduced from the bench and he made an instant impact gathering a breaking ball and his deep hand pass found Ryan Farnham, Farnham tore down on goal and hit a rocket of a shot from the 21 yard line to the top corner of the net to draw the sides level once again.
This is when Kells kicked on and after Charlie Twomey pointed, substitute Zak Griffin hit the net with a goal while Eoghan Flynn added a point. Charlie Twomey then struck 0-04 including a two pointer free to see Gaeil Colmcille lead by 8 as the game moved into the final five minutes. Dylan Roche added a sixth goal for Kells after he gathered a loose ball and fired low for the three pointer. Simonstown pushed to get back into the game with two points in a row and would have been closer only for a good save from Caoimhin Jordan in the Kells goal.
Twomey added another point before a second goal from Griffin and a Keelan Sheridan goal wrapped the scoring up and the win for Gaeil Colmcille.
