FL Div 5: Cortown comeback downs Dunshaughlin

June 19, 2026

Cortown's Davy Rispin

Dunshaughlin 0-10 Cortown 1-11

Cortown made it four wins from their last five games with a come from behind win in Dunshaughlin on a balmy Thursday evening.

A strong breeze blowing towards the road end in Dunshaughlin made it the proverbial game of two halves with scores difficult to come by into the school end of the ground.

Having chosen to play against the elements in the opening half, Cortown kept their hosts relatively subdued for the opening quarter with the men in black and amber kicking the opening two scores in a low-key opening stanza.

The visitors eventually opened their account thanks to Hugh Staunton, fresh from a weekend triathlon in Kerry. However a quickfire brace of two-pointers from Dunshaughlin opened up a seven point advantage approaching the break.

Cortown gave themselves a massive shot in the arm just before the interval. Staunton fetched Colm McGearty's kick-out before offloading to Jake Coyne who's cushioned ball into the path of Kian Fitzsimons was perfect for the full forward to curl into the net to leave Cortown just four in arrears, 0-8 to 1-1.

The home side did a decent job at quelling Cortown's ambitions at the beginning of the second half. Davy Rispin did belt over a two-pointer to cut the gap back down to two.

The excellent Ciaran Sheridan responded for Dunshaughlin but Colm McGearty immediately cancelled it out with a well dispatched '45. The sides once again traded points, Staunton with a pointed free for the men in yellow after the tireless Ciarán Keating was chopped down.

The elusive Elliot Reilly popped up with a timely two-pointer from the top of the arc to restore parity with 10 minutes to go. Then Staunton held his nerve to curl over a pressure two-point free to put Davy Wright's side in front for the first time with 5 to go.

Superb defending from the Clarke brothers, Barry Canning and co. kept the Dunshaughlin side at bay with Rispin sealing the deal down the other end with a second two-pointer of the half in the dying embers as the valuable two points on offer were brought back up the M3 in the incessant rain.
