Darragh Murphy receives the Seamus Heaney Cup at Paddy O'Brien Park

Navan O’Mahony’s 1-15 Simonstown Gaels 2-10

It was a tight encounter in Paddy O’Brien Park between O’Mahony’s and Simonstown in the Div 2 FL, which doubled up as the Seamus Heaney Cup. The lead swapped hands on five occasions, with the sides level five times also.

Niall Higgins opened the scoring for O’Mahony’s almost immediately. Simonstown responded in turn four minutes later. Two points in a ninety second period from Evan Coffey and Cormac Nugent put O’Mahony’s ahead again. A two-point free midway for Simonstown through the half brought the sides level.

Simonstown tok the lead for the first time in the eighteenth minute before Robbie Keelaghan nullified the advantage again. A minute later, the Dillon brothers combined with Paddy slotting over to edge O’Mahony’s ahead. O’Mahony’s netminder Jamie O’Reilly pulled off an impressive save before Simonstown sent the rebound to the net to go ahead by a point. Injury time points from Mallon and Nugent left O’Mahony’s with the narrowest of advantages at the break.

Simonstown had the better start to the second half and dominated much of the opening ten minutes. A goal in the thirty-fourth minute was followed by two points from play to leave four in it, the biggest margin at any stage in the sixty minutes.

O’Mahony’s were settled when Keelaghan scored from play, followed quickly by a similar score from Mallon. In the forty-fourth minute, Eoghan Nugent finished an impressive run with a goal to swap the advantage again. The lead wasn’t to last however, and within thirty seconds the visitors had drawn level before taking the lead within another minute.

Dillon, again assisted by his brother, restored O’Mahony’s lead with a good two-pointer from play. Three scores under pressure from Cormac Nugent in the final quarter were important in settling O’Mahony’s, as was a fifty-minute clearance from Sean Betson. Simonstown hit two points in the same period to leave O’Mahony’s as three point victors.

After the match, Michael Bennett spoke on behalf of O’Mahony’s before presenting, along with the Heaney family, the Seamus Heaney Cup to Darragh Murphy. €1,120 was raised at the gate for the Oncology Unit of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda through NECRET.
