St. Peter's, Dunboyne 0-14 Gaeil Colmcille 1-17
Gaeil Colmcille continued their winning ways with a six point win over St. Peter’s, Dunboyne away on Saturday evening. Choosing to play with or against the wind in the first half is always a debatable question and unsure of who won the toss it was Kells who would play with the conditions in the opening half.
Right from the off Gaeil Colmcille used the aid of the breeze as Seamus Mattimoe struck a two pointer in the opening 30 seconds, that could have been a whole lot better only for the St. Peter’s keeper to make a great save low from an Andrew Gormley shot. Gormley did add a point soon after his goal effort and two two-pointers in quick succession saw Kells lead 0-07 to 0-00 with less than eight minutes played. Kells had the ball in the back l of the between all that but Gormley’s palmed effort to the back of the net was ruled out for a square ball.
Gormley struck a wonderful two point free to increase Kells lead before Dunboyne finally got on the board with a point in the 15th minute. That point was cancelled out when Gormley turned provider and laid the ball off to Ajay Tormey who pointed to regain Kells 9 point lead.
Both sides traded the next to scores with a Gormley left footed point registering the Gaeils score. Not to be outdone, brother John Gormley found himself in an advanced position and after good build on John struck over Gaeil Colmcille’s 12 point of the game. Liam Ferguson was unlucky not to hit the back of the net after a ball dropped short he rose highest, plucked the ball turned and shot for goal but his effort whizzed by the upright and wide. Dunboyne did get the last score of the half but they trailed 0-03 to 0-12 at the break.
It was the hosts turn to use the elements in their favour and with just two minutes played they cut Kells lead from 9 points to 5 points after hitting two two-pointers. Just as Dunboyne got some momentum Kells struck for the first and only goal of the game when Liam Ferguson got on the end of a good move to find the back of the net.
Kells couldn’t keep Dunboyne away and two points in a row saw the Kells lead cut back to six points. Andrew Gormley pointed to increase the lead to seven. Seamus Mattimoe had a chance to kill the game off but after blitzing through the Dunboyne the defence the Black and Amber’s goalkeeper got down low to keep out Mattimoe.
Dunboyne hit three points in a row to leave four between the sides and it was game on with 12 minutes remaining. Mattimoe and Gormley hit two points from play to ease the Kells nerves while Mattimoe raced through for a fisted effort to leave seven once again between the teams. St. Peter’s struck a two pointer late on but it was Kells substitute Harry Butler that got the last point of the match with a free that youngster won himself. The win for Kells keeps them in third place as the league moves into its final three rounds.
