Skryne 1-15 Gaeil Colmcille 2-13
A nervy last five minutes for Gaeil Colmcille who held on to a one point victory that didn't look likely when Skryne's Darragh Campion stepped up with a two point free attempt after Kells were adjudged of a three up breach in the last play of the game. The majority of the crowd would have put their Communion money on Campion nailing the free after striking over more difficult ones in the 58th and 60th minute to leave just a point between the sides but thankfully for the visiting supporters and team it went to the left and wide and Kells help on for the win.
The hosts got off to a flyer and were 1-03 to 0-01 up after 12 minutes when Ian Davis found the back of the net with a low left footed effort that Barry Farrelly knew nothing about. The goal was probably the wake up call for Kells and immediately after Aaron Browne stepped up and hit a fine two pointer to leave three between the teams.
Browne followed that with his trademark run and finish in the 15th minute and less than 40 seconds later Liam Barry pointed from an acute angle. Gaeil Colmcille took the lead for the first time in the 18th minute with Liam Ferguson hit a lovely two pointer with the outside of his right boot to leave Kells 0-07 to 1-03 ahead. Barry had a free brought up to in front of the posts and made no mistake.
With 24 minutes played Fionn Smith found himself in the right spot at the right time like he has done so in each of the games this year and he found the back of the net to extend the lead out to four points. Skryne closed out the half with a point and they trailed 1-04 to 1-08 at the break.
Kells got the perfect start with a two pointer from Adam Donnelly and after Skryne got their first point of the half, Liam Barry sailed over a two pointer of his own from a free off the deck. At this point Kells led by seven points and looked to be in complete control but as with all Skryne sides they never gave up and four points in a row plus a two pointer and all of a sudden there was just the minimum between the teams with a quarter of the game to go. Adam Muldoon had a great chance of a goal but his effort just went wide from close range.
Kells held their nerve and Liam Ferguson picked a ball from the skies from a Seamus Mattimoe shot that dropped short and Ferguson's quick thinking laid the ball off to Ajay Tormey who rounded the goalkeeper and find the back of the net. Oisin Reilly picked a point soon after and Kells once again led by five points.
It remained five points until the 58th minute when Campion struck over the first of his two two-pointers with the second in the 61st minute. And having opted not to settle for the draw it was Gaeil Colmcille who benefited with two points on the board after a brilliant duel in Fr. McManus Park.
