Kilmainham 0-6, Slane 0-16
Kilmainham welcomed recent Tailteann Cup winners Slane to Kilmainham for round 4 of the Div 3 A League on Saturday 18th April 2026. The Kilmainham camp were in good spirits after a very good win against Castletown in round 3. Slane were also in good form, and a tough match was expected.
Slane drew first blood and got off the mark with a good point from play. They hit a second point before Dylan Morgan got us off the mark. Slane were attacking in waves with strong running from their defence, but Kilmainham were defending well and were making it difficult for the away side to open us up. We missed a few chances that normally we would score. Slane were able to get their scores easier, and they opened up a 6-point lead. Lewis Curran got in for a good goal chance but dragged his effort wide. Freddie Newman popped over a free off his left to reduce the deficit to 5 points as referee Kieran Olwill blew for a half-time. The first half performance didn’t lack effort, but the performance was very flat, and we over played the ball several times and got dispossessed.
Half-time score: Kilmainham 0-2, Slane 0-7
Mickey Newman would have been looking for a big start to the second half to get back into this match. Instead, it was Slane who pounced for the first two points of the second half after poor passing in the Kilmainham defence. From here on Slane kept us at arm's length. They hit some nice team scores to keep their noses in front. Kilmainham continued to have plenty of possession, but they were very slow and ponderous with it. This allowed Slane to set up well defensively and make it difficult for us to get back into the match. Dylan Morgan did hit two points from placed balls. Shane Morgan blasted over the Slane bar after a good break away run by Mickey Newman. Slane hit the last point of the match to wrap up a deserved win on the day. Overall, this was a disappointing performance after the high of the last round. You could not fault the effort or work rate, and the lads never dropped their heads. The lads know that they have plenty to work on in the coming weeks. Starting with big numbers at training Tuesday night.
Our second team will play St. Pauls away on Friday 1st May at 8pm in round 4 of the Division 11 A league. Then on Saturday 2nd May our first team head to Ballivor in round 5 of the Division 3 A League with a 6pm throw in. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported the teams in both matches over the weekend.
