A gale-force wind ensured that it was a game of two halves in Kiltale on Saturday afternoon, when O’Mahony’s got their second win of the Div 3 HL.

Kiltale had the wind behind them from the outset and got off to a good start, finding the net within sixty seconds and adding three points in the first three minutes. Finn Malone, on the five minute mark, got O’Mahony’s first score.

The next ten minutes saw Kiltale extend their lead before Malone hit his second point. This was the pattern for much of the remainder of the half, with O’Mahony’s struggling to get scores on the board against the wind. Killian Murphy from a placed ball and Dermot McKenna from play were successful and O’Mahony’s went in at the break with a nine-point deficit.

McKenna and Murphy added to their earlier scores with points in the opening five minutes. Jack Flynn caught a high ball before being fouled in the fifth minute. Darragh Connell directed the subsequent free to Shane McCarthy who sent it to the net.

Further points from Murphy and Lorcan McDermott meant that O’Mahony’s were down by a single point entering the final ten minutes. Kiltale briefly extended the lead when Max Lafford did well to deflect a goal-shot over the bar before Paddy Dillon hit two points to leave the sides level.

A well placed pass from McKenna set McCarthy up nicely for his second goal. The hosts didn’t give up and hit the next two scores, reducing O’Mahony’s lead to the minimum as the clock went over the sixty-minute mark. Injury time points from Dillon, Murphy and McDermott were the insurance that O’Mahony’s needed.

In the back-line, Aaron Gavin, Darragh Connell, Colm O’Toole and Finn McNally made some impressive clearances while Mick Reavey put the Kiltale forwards under pressure.
