Summerhill had little trouble swatting aside neighbours Moynalvey in this Husqvarna P.R Coyne Div. 1 football league game played at Kilmore Park Moynalvey on Wednesday evening 8th April.
Moynalvey 0-7
Summerhill 1-22
Albeit far from a full strength Summerhill side, the Keegan Cup champions had too much firepower for their Intermediate opponents in this local derby in round 3 of the league.
The visitors were first to trouble the score keeper with a hat trick of points via Conor Lyons, Ben Moran and Bobby O’Shea before Moynalvey opened their account in the 11th minute when Paul Corcoran sent over.
Adam Murphy pointed a free for the home side after William Harnan was bundled over, before four scores from the village side from Conor Lyons, Jack Regan, Diarmuid McCabe and the game’s first two pointer from goalkeeper Sean Muddiman from out near the dressing room sideline left it 0-8 to 0-2 with twenty three minutes played.
Adam Murphy briefly broke the Summerhill scoring with his second of the evening this time from play, with Liam Shaw and Vinny Walsh trading points to leave it 0-9 to 0-4 with thirty minutes played.
Moynalvey were handed a lifeline on the stroke of half time when William Harnan was adjudged to have been fouled for a penalty to be awarded, only for Vinny Walsh to drag his spot kick wide of the left hand post for the final play of the first half before referee Andrew Smith blew his half time whistle, 0-9 to 0-4 at the break.
The half time introduction of Hugh O’Sullivan had an immediate impact as a bursting run drew the free which Vinny Walsh converted for Moynalvey’s fifth of the evening.
Any hope of a Moynalvey fightback were quashed with Summerhill reeling off 1-5 without reply over the next ten minutes, the game’s only goal coming from centre back Kevin Lyons and points from Liam Shaw (2), Diarmuid McCabe and a two pointer from Bobby O’Shea left it 1-14 to 0-5 twelve minutes into the second half.
Moynalvey eventually broke the Summerhill scoring spree with a Mark O’Sullivan point, followed two minutes later with a point from substitute Sean Duggan to leave it 1-14 to 0-7 at the three quarter hour mark.
That was as good as it got for Moynalvey as Summerhill finished off the final quarter with an unanswered eight points, Liam Shaw (2), Conor Frayne, Manny Magno and finished off with a pair of two pointers from both midfielders, the first a Jack Regan effort off the outside of the boot from the right hand side, followed by a Diarmuid McCabe effort for his side’s fourth two pointer of the evening, meaning Dave Clare’s men made the short journey back across the R156 with their more than comfortable first win of the league and the two points on offer.
