Kildalkey 2-23 Trim 3-19
When Trim and Kildalkey senior hurlers meet they always seem to bring out the best in each other and this Brendan Davis semifinal in St Loman’s Park on Tuesday night didn’t disappoint as they produced a highly entertaining high quality affair.
Both teams and supporters arrived early for the 6-45 throw in on a fine evening that had a real summer feel to it but it was Trim that started like a train hitting 2 goals in as many minutes from Daniel Murray and his brother James from the penalty spot before Kildalkey registered their first score from Nicky Potterton to get them up and running and although Trim hit back Kildalkey started to get into their rhythm and hit points from Nicky Paddy Coneely Niall McNally Kevin Mckeon and Evan Fitzgerald but Trim scored goal number 3 from the impressive Daniel Murray again Nicky hit back with a free and another from play but Trim still led at the break by 2 points 3-9 to 0-16 .
Niall McNally and Nicky Potterton scored the first 2 points for the blues at the start of the second half but James Murray had a patch where he hit a few wonderful points from far out and tagged on a few more frees but then Kelvin Lynch went on a mazey run and blasted to the net soon after a long delivery in was caught brilliantly by Conor Fitzgerald who passed to Paddy Conneely who calmly struck the back of the net and followed up with a point Trim hit back through Murray who added to his tally and after a delay from a nasty injury to David Murtagh who had to leave the field by stretcher.
Trim looked to have won the game having led from the start but Kildalkey never gave up and Nicky Potterton from a free put 1 in it and another free drew the sides level and there was still time for 1 more attack and Nicky got his hands on the ball and fired Kildalkey to the lead for the first time deep into injury time.
The ball was pucked out and referee Ciaran Flynn blew for full time.
It was very tough on Trim who led right through after their fast start but great for Kildalkey who never gave up and persevered to the end to get their noses in front when it mattered most.
It was a highly entertaining and enjoyable game and with both sides short a few important players both sets of supporters can look forward to a league and championship meeting later on in the year if it’s as good as tonight we’ll be happy.
Kildalkey now go on to meet Kilyon next week in a repeat of last year’s final that was won by Kilyon.
