Navan O’Mahony’s 0-14
Ballinabrackey 1-08
Storm Dave was in full flow on Saturday evening in Paddy O’Brien Park as O’Mahony’s made it three from three in the Div 2 FL with a three point win over Ballinabrackey.
With the wind behind them, O’Mahony’s were off to a lightning quick start in the first half. After as many minutes, O’Mahony’s led by eight points with scores from Shane McCarthy, Paddy Dillon, Robbie Keelaghan and Evan Coffey.
This blitz of scoring wasn’t to last, however and Ballinabrackey hit the next three scores to reduce the gap to five points with five minutes remaining in the first half. Late scores from Jack Quinn and Aodhán Mallon edged O’Mahony’s further ahead before half time and seven points separated the sides. With the gale that was blowing, it was unclear whether this lead would be enough.
Navan O’Mahony’s 0-10
Ballinabrackey 0-03
A goal almost immediately after the resumption gave Ballinabrackey great encouragement and reduced the gap to four with almost a full half to play. Both sides were soon reduced to fourteen men, when Hugo Fitzherbert and Damien Carroll were dismissed.
By the forty-first minute, Ballinabrackey had reduced the gap to two and looked like they had all the momentum with the wind. Two minutes later, a two-pointer from play left the sides level. O’Mahony’s continued to work hard, as they had done since the start of the match with Conor Finnegan putting in a serious shift in the middle of the pitch. Diarmuid O Bric, Eoghan Nugent and James O’Reilly worked hard in defence also. O’Mahony’s managed to keep the scoreboard ticking over with scores from Mallon, McCarthy and substitute Dean Halpin. In the mean time, Ballinabrackey hit a number of wides with the wind hard to shoot into and were denied some goal scoring opportunities by Coffey and O’Mahony’s ran out as four point winners.
