A below par Seneschalstown were put to the sword by a hungry Walterstown in the third round of JM Food Service Division 2 Football League played in Fr. Tully Park on Saturday evening. Storm Dave certainly made it’s presence felt with a extremely strong winds blowing diagonally across the pitch along with intermittent showers which made playing conditions very difficult for both teams.
The visitors won the toss and elected to play into the conditions and as the first half played out, it was a decision that looked justified.
Neither side scored for the opening ten minutes but when the first score did arrive, it would prove crucial as Walterstown raised a green flag when the wind caught hold of a point attempt as it landed in the net. They followed up with a free following a 50 metre advancement and it Seneschalstown looked in big trouble.
It took them 17 minutes to score when Simon Rooney hooked over from close range but two further points for Walterstown left them five to the good before Seneschalstown injected some life into their performance.
Alan Mulvany knocked over two frees before Eoin Finnegan kicked a two pointer off his right foot and Seneschalstown now only trailed by one at the break.
Indeed Seneschalstown were level 30 seconds after the resumption when Mulvany kicked his third free from the 13 metre line following a 50 metre advancement from a foul at the throw-in.
Walterstown regained control immediately however with a two pointer and single point effort moved them three ahead again by the 40th minute.
Alan Mulvany from another free kept Seneschalstown in touch but backed by the wind Walterstown were able to keep the hosts at arms length and went four to the good entering the final ten minutes.
Eoin Finnegan kicked his third of the day from a placed ball but Seneschalstown could not force the goal they needed as Walterstown headed back up the road with the victory.
