Dunboyne 1-17 Drumree 1-13
Dunboyne’s Intermediate hurlers opened their Division 2 League campaign with a solid four-point win over near neighbours Drumree under the lights in Kepak Park, capping off an excellent week for the club.
The visitors struck first with an early free, but Dunboyne quickly found their rhythm thanks to the sharp shooting of Sean Quigley. With his accuracy on point throughout, Quigley fired over three early scores from play, assisted well by Cian Rohan and Liam Callanan. By the 18th minute, Dunboyne led 0:06 to 0:04.
A further Quigley free extended the lead, before Drumree narrowly missed a goal chance. Dunboyne then seized control before the break. Fergal Chawke landed an outstanding long-range point, and Sean Cregan struck for a crucial goal, while Quigley continued to add from placed balls. At half-time, Dunboyne held a commanding lead: 1:10 to 0:05.
Drumree came out strongly in the second half, registering two early frees. Conor Murphy made an immediate impact off the bench with a point, while goalkeeper Liam Davis produced an important save to deny a goal, though Drumree converted the resulting ’65.
Dunboyne responded well. Jason Nolan pointed after good work from Niall Smyth, and Murphy added another fine score after fielding a long delivery from Davis. Midway through the half, Dunboyne led 1:13 to 0:08.
As the game intensified, Drumree chipped away at the deficit with frees, but Quigley remained composed, adding three more to maintain Dunboyne’s advantage heading into the closing stages.
Drumree finished strongly, outscoring Dunboyne 1:03 to 0:01 in the final minutes, with a late goal arriving deep into stoppage time. However, Dunboyne had done enough to secure a deserved 1:17 (8f) to 1:13 (7f, 1x’65)victory.
This result marks a promising start to the league campaign, with a tougher rematch likely when the sides meet again later in the Intermediate Championship.
