FL Div 4: Bective goals down Moynalty

March 23, 2026

Moynalty's Eoin Gilsenan

Bective 4-08 Moynalty 1-12

The old saying “goals win games” rang true in this Round 2 Division 4 league clash between Bective and Moynalty. For long stretches, Moynalty looked the better side, but Bective’s experience and late surge proved decisive. Two quick second-half goals ultimately swung the game in their favour, allowing them to push ahead and see it out in the closing stages.

Bective applied the early pressure, but Moynalty’s defence held firm and kept the hosts scoreless. Johnny Lynch opened the scoring with a well-struck ’45, and Bryan McCormack followed up with another point. Bective eventually got on the board in the 12th minute, but Moynalty responded immediately as Niall O’Connor, back in midfield, powered through the centre to add another score.

Ollie Sheridan and Odhran McMahon extended the lead further, with Sheridan’s effort from the left particularly impressive given the tight angle and distance. However, Bective struck a major blow against the run of play, cutting through the Moynalty defence to net their first goal, followed shortly by a close-range free. O’Connor, now dictating play in midfield, added another point before Eoin Gilsenan grabbed his first adult goal with a composed finish, putting Moynalty firmly in control. Bective responded with two frees to narrow the gap, but Gilsenan had the final say of the half, clipping over an excellent point to leave Moynalty leading at the break.

HT Score: Bective 1-05 Moynalty 1-08

Donal Curtis’s men clearly did some soul-searching at half-time, emerging for the second half as a different side. Early pressure paid off with a well-taken point, but Moynalty remained composed, and Johnny Lynch responded with an excellent two-pointer from distance to stretch their lead.

That score, however, seemed to spark Bective into life. Showing great patience, they broke down the Moynalty defence twice in quick succession to raise two goals in the space of just two minutes. One, it must be said, came with a slice of fortune, rebounding off the post before rolling past the helpless Johnny Lynch.

Paddy Byrne, who was outstanding once again, added his second point of the day as Moynalty introduced fresh legs in attack, with Eanna Bennett replacing Joe McMahon and Jude Gilsenan coming on for Odhran McMahon. By this stage, though, Bective had taken a firm grip on proceedings, and their experience began to tell. They added another point from a free before carving open a tiring Moynalty defence for their fourth goal. To their credit, Moynalty never let their heads drop. Paul Lynch, who impressed throughout at wing-forward, clipped over a fine point to reduce the deficit as the visitors piled on the pressure. Cormac Kearney was introduced in midfield for John Brogan, who had put in a strong shift, but Bective managed the closing stages well. Holding possession intelligently, they added a late score to seal the win and secure the points.
