FL Div 4: Ultans secure first points

St Ultans secured their first points of the League with victory over Ratoath in Thomas Coogan Park, Martry.

The home side opened their account through Daragh Reilly with a point from play. Ratoath responded with a two pointer from play to gain an early lead. The home side missed a number of chances but scored three points in a row a brace of free’s from Ruairi Buchanan and a 45 from midfielder Jonny Foster. Ratoath replied to with two well worked points from play to draw the sides level. Adam Rogers intercepted a short kickout from the Ratoath keeper and played in Daragh Reilly who drove forward and unleashed a bullet of a shot to the top corner of the net. Ratoath closed out the first half well with two further points either side of a Buchanan free.

The start of the second half was a cagey affair with neither side gaining momentum, Ratoath opened with a free and Conor Finnegan pointed from play. Ratoath brought the gap back to one with a point from play and it was anyone’s game. Every score was crucial this stage and the home side  pushed on with three points from play from Buchanan, Finnegan and Daragh Reilly. Rataoth pointed to narrow the gap to three but Ruairi Buchanan and Conor Finnegan looked to have put the game out of Ratoath’s reach. Ratoath won a penalty with time almost up and duly converted to leave two between the sides. Ultans defended the arc well in final moments and were relieved to hear the final whistle.
