Seneschalstown 2-13 Clann na nGael 0-15
Seneschalstown made it two wins from two in the JM Food Services Football League Division 2 after a four point win in Athboy on Saturday evening. After finding themselves a couple of points in arrears after the interval, two goals in four minutes swung the game Senschalstown’s way and kept Clann na nGael at arms length for the remainder of the contest.
The away side started brightly, kicking the first three points of the game inside the opening eight minutes. Alan Mulvany got Seneschalstown off the mark with a free before Donie Commons finished a move from the 20 metre line after some really patient build up play. Seneschalstown’s third came from Mattie Cowley who curled over a fine score from the right hand side of the D’.
The hosts got off the mark with two points on the bounce in a sixty second spell by the eleventh minute but Alan Mulvany made it double scores at 0-04 to 0-02 with a point from a central position in the thirteenth minute.
Clann na nGael replied with a score of their own but by the 21st minute Seneschalstown lead by four. Eoin Finnegan pointed off his right boot after Dylan Keating made an interception on halfway before Séimí Byrne clipped over unmarked after quick thinking on a free from Liam Dillon. Finnegan was on target again to leave it 0-07 to 0-03 and Seneschalstown looked like they were building a lead for themselves.
However Clann na nGael raised an orange flag for a two pointer and followed up with another single point effort to leave the minimum between the teams. The sides swapped scores at the end of the half with Eoin Finnegan’s free ensuing Seneschalstown lead by one at half-time.
Seneschalstown will not have been impressed with their third quarter showing as the Athboy men had turned the one point deficit into a two point lead by the 42nd minute courtesy of a two point free and two other points with Ronan Conneely responsible for Seneschalstown’s only score in this spell.
However, over the next five minutes Seneschalstown turned the game on its head. Finnegan knocked over a free before the first of Seneschalstown’s two goals arrived.
Cian Hosie, a half-time substitute, did well to play through Niall Hickey on goal and he rounded the onrushing keeper to finish to the net. Three minutes later Hosie went from provider to finisher as a superb team move right from their own endline for Seneschalstown went through a number of hands the whole way up the pitch before Hosie shot low left footed the to the near corner and Seneschalstown now lead by five points. This was followed up with a score from another substitute, Seán Davis as he announced his introduction with a fine point, fresh from kicking six for the second team the night before.
To their credit the 2025 Junior Champions did not lie down and three points on the bounce, including another free from outside the two point arc halved the deficit entering the final seven minutes.
Seán Reilly was next to score for Seneschalstown with the corner back getting forward for a rare score to give his side some breathing room as the clock favoured the men in blue. The gap was four points at the end as both teams added another point each with Eoin Finnegan kicking over a free to ensure Seneschalstown saw out the game and went home with the points in the bag.
