O’Mahony’s came out on top in this entertaining match in Paddy O’Brien Park in the second round of the Div 2 Football League. 

Evan Coffey got O’Mahony’s off to a great start, with two points in as many minutes. Taking the lead in the first minute, O’Mahony’s held it, albeit narrowly at times, until the final whistle. In the fifth minute, a high Coffey ball into the square was won by Shane McCarthy who directed it to the net.

In the tenth minute, Meath Hill got their first score and added to it a minute later. Cormac Nugent got his first score in the thirteenth minute, with Meath Hill responding almost immediately. Nugent, Aodhan Mallon (free) and Shane McCarthy (mark) added points in quick succession to extend O’Mahony’s lead.

After points from Nugent and Paddy Dillon, seven points separated the sides. In spite of being reduced to fourteen men with a black card, it was Meath Hill who finished the second half stronger, kicking the last three points.

Mallon got the opening score in the second half with a good effort, with Meath Hill replicating it at the opposite end of the pitch. Tom Cully’s hard work was rewarded when he kicked a point.

Midway through the half, Meath Hill reduced the gap to a goal with two points, the second of which was assisted over by the upright. Substitute Clayton O’Sullivan gave O’Mahony’s some breathing space but the next two scores came from Meath Hill to reduce the gap to two.

Dillon, who impressed throughout, kicked an important score after a good one-two with Jack Quinn. The final score of the match came from the visitors, but O’Mahony’s held out for the two point win, reduced to fourteen men for a time after Coffey’s dismissal on a second yellow.
