
Donaghmore Ashbourne 2-11 Wolfe Tones 1-16
Donaghmore Ashbourne 1stteam hosted Wolfe Tones in the opening round of the Division 1 league in Ashbourne and it was the visitors who claimed victory with their ability to raise the orange flag on more occasions than their hosts.
The sides traded points in the opening minutes with Dylan Brady replying to the opening score from the Kilberry men. Wolfe Tones regained the lead with a goal on 4 minutes and although Kevin Cully pointed on 6 minutes this was Donaghmore Ashbourne’s last score of the opening quarter while Wolfe Tones extended their lead a with a free and a 2-pointer from play.
The second quarter was end to end with Zach Thornton converting a free on 16 minutes. The sides traded 2-pointers with Thomas O’Reilly’s orange flag from play followed by an Eoin Ryan converted free. Kevin Fenton scored a point on 24 minutes but again O’Reilly raised the orange flag a minute later. Donaghmore Ashbourne got a lifeline when Jamie Browne found the back of the net to leave two points between the teams heading to the interval, but another well taken 2-pointer in injury time from O’Reilly gave Wolfe Tones a 1-10 to 1-06 lead at the interval.
The second half was also end to end with some good defending and turnovers by both sides and scores were hard earned. Wolfe Tones extended their lead to 7 points with a free on 35 minutes and another 2-pointer on 41 minutes, but Thomas Mc Govern’s 2-pointer had reduced the deficit to 5 points on 42 minutes. Two single points from the Tones had regained the 7-point advantage although Fenton did reply on 52 minutes with another white flag. When Dylan Brady finished off a good team move with a goal on 56 minutes there was only three points between the teams. Wolfe Tones last score came from a free and although Eoin Ryan raised the orange flag with a free in injury time the visitors held out for the victory.
Overall, an entertaining game for the opening round of the league. Next up for Donaghmore Ashbourne is an away game against Gaeil Colmcille.
