Tailteann Shield: Moynalty off the mark

Cortown 1-8 Moynalty 0-12

Moynalty made the short trip to face Cortown in Round 2 of the Tailteann Shield, their first outing in the competition after Round 1 was postponed due to bad weather. In truth, this one probably should have been called off too, as horrendous conditions and driving rain made life difficult for the few brave spectators who turned up.

Under new manager Micheál McDermott, Moynalty started brightly, moving the ball well and picking up breaks around the middle. They carved open Cortown’s defence early on, and only a superb save from the home goalkeeper denied Bryan McCormack a certain goal. Moynalty’s early dominance was rewarded with fine scores from Paddy Byrnes and debutant David Daly, giving them a deserved lead. As the half wore on, conditions deteriorated further, leading to numerous handling errors from both sides. The game became open and scrappy, with neither team able to fully settle.

Half-Time: Moynalty 0-09 Cortown 0-03

Moynalty made several the changes at the break, giving more young players their chance, but Cortown upped their game and began to take control, upping their intensity and winning the dirty ball in midfield. They struck a purple patch midway through the half, landing a series of long-range points, including two 2 pointers to close the gap.

In the closing stages, Cortown were firmly on top and were finally rewarded with a well-taken goal, cutting the deficit to a single point. Moments later, they drew level with another point, setting up a tense finale.

However, a costly defensive lapse gave Moynalty a chance to regain the lead, which they duly took. Both sides battled but it was Moynalty who emerged with the points in dreadful conditions.
