HS Meath Awards: Hurling Game of the Year

December 29, 2025

Ratoath's Cian Kelly with Fearghal McCabe and Ross Ryan Kiltale during the SHC final at Pairc Tailteann

There are a number of contenders for our hurling game of the year.

Trim and Kilmessan served up a brilliant game in the U21 Division 1 championship final, goals proved crucial for the Town side as they prevented a three in a row for the team in White and Blue.

In woeful conditions Killyon and Longwood played out a very entertaining draw in the Senior B final at Pairc Tailteann. Keith Keogan led his men to the Kit Mitchell Cup a week later.

The semi final meeting between Trim and Ratoath kept the large crowd in attendance at Pairc Tailteann entertained right until the finish. By the end of the third quarter Trim led 0-21 to 1-15 but three goals in the last ten minutes gave the holders a 5-18 to 0-22 victory.

Our game of the season is the drawn SHC final between Ratoath and Kiltale. On a very difficult day for hurling the two teams served up what was one of the best county finals seen at Pairc Tailteann ever.

A Cian Rogers goal had the Jubilee Cup holders two points in front with four minutes of normal time left. Fearghal McCabe finished a goalmouth scramble deep in injury time and Kiltale looked to have pulled off a spectacular win but Podge O’Hanrahan sent over an equaliser just before Mark O’Reilly’s full time whistle and the teams would have to come back to Navan the following weekend.

Ratoath, who didn’t concede a goal all through the campaign, found themselves 2-12 to 2-10 down at the break. By the end of the third quarter they were in two in front and looked to be on their way to retain the title. Kiltale had other ideas. Points from Mark O’Sullivan (2) and Jack Bannon put the former champions ahead with eight minutes remaining. Rogers put Ratoath back in front with their fourth goal. Jack Regan and Cian Kelly traded points as injury time approached to leave the scoreline 2-19 to 4-15 but the drama wasn’t finished. McCabe’s goal and O’Hanrahan’s late late leveller set up a mouth watering replay.
