U19 Div 1 FC semi final: Holders bow out

Seneschalstown's Cian Commons

Seneschalstown 0-07 St. Patrick’s 0-11

Seneschalstown relinquished their Under 19 Football Championship Division 1 crown on Monday night, going down to a four point defeat to St. Patrick’s in Fr. Tully Park on Monday night.

The Stamullen outfit certainly looked the hungrier team, and were no doubt motivated by last year’s Final defeat to the same opposition by the narrowest of margins a little under twelve months ago.

The visitors opened the scoring with a point in the opening minute with Cian Hosie conjuring up Seneschalstown’s first score after nine minutes.

The first half didn’t lack for effort and endeavour but it did lack quality in front of goal and spectators had to wait until the 19th minute for the next score which went the way of St. Patrick’s.  Seneschalstown did have a chance to go in front after a quick counter attack ended with the ball in the hands of Jamie Norris but was denied by a smart stop from the St. Pat’s goalkeeper.

However, the home side did edge in front with a two point free from Charlie Finnegan after Collie Scanlon was fouled after 26 minutes.

The visitors though, had the last say of the opening half with a two point free of their own right on the shirt whistle to head for the warmth of the dressing rooms leading 0-04 to 0-03.

Upon the resumption, the East Meath side increased their advantage straight from the throw-in with another single point score.

Seneschalstown needed a response and Cian Commons came up with exactly that as he made space for himself to get a shot off from just outside the two point arc and he launched an effort between the posts to draw the sides level.  However Seneschalstown couldn’t build on this and St. Patrick’s kicked the next four points over fifteen minutes to build what was a big lead in such a low scoring game, 0-09 to 0-05 with ten minutes left on the clock.

Seneschalstown were given another opportunity to halve the deficit when Charlie Finnegan stood over a two point free after a three up breach by the side in white to leave two between them with six minutes left.

As Seneschalstown became more desperate, St. Patrick’s cleared a couple if dangerous balls angled towards the square and were able to pick off two further scores to book their place in the decider and leave Seneschalstown devastated.
