Delight for Carnaross after their win over Moynalty in the Under 13 Division 5 Shield final at Ballinlough

Carnaross 6-10 Moynalty 2-10

Carnaross U13 boys team travelled to Ballinlough to take on neighbours Moynalty in their long awaited Championship Division 5 shield final. Despite having the upper hand on their opponents in previous encounters, finals are a different story and it can go anyway on a particular day at this age level, but our boys were well tutored and prepared for this scenario.

Our lads opted to play with the wind in the first half, a decision that proved fruitful, as the boys showed no ill effects of not having played a competitive game in seven weeks. They produced the best 30 minutes of football they played this year with a team performance full of energy, passion, and a will to win. They were relentless in this half, with every player winning their individual battles all over the pitch. Hard running, big tackles, and free scoring was the order of the game, with Carnaross on top. Moynalty did try hard, but the boys in maroon and amber were on form, and not for turning, and ended the half hitting 2 goals and ten points. Moynalty did get a goal towards the end of the half, giving them some hope for the second half.

The second thirty minutes proved a tougher test, as the Moynalty boys, to their credit, now had the wind and were not going to give up any time soon. They took the game to Carnaross and kicked some super scores. However, they needed a few goals, and as the old saying goes, goals win games, and it was the Carnaross lads who had the edge here. As Moynalty hit points, the Carnaross team responded with goals at crucial times, just to keep the distance between the two teams. The early onslaught that the gallant Moynalty team put up in the second half faded as the Carnaross lads again took control at the finish to see them ending up winners on a 6-10 to 2-10 scoreline., and take home the Division 5 Championship shield.

After a few difficult years at this age grade, these boys have received just rewards for their efforts. A very well rounded group who can be moulded into a very good team. Hard work and a willingness to better themselves are key ingredients for this, which they have in abundance. Great praise must go to the young Moynalty team, who made a great game of it in the second half and also to the Moynalty mentors who helped them. Also thanks to Paul Mooney, the referee who did a fine job officiating. Thanks also to Ballinlough for hosting the game, but the biggest praise of the day must go to these Carnaross young guns, who did themselves proud, their families, and our club. A complete all-round performance where every panel member stood up to achieve the group goal. As they say "praise the youth and they will flourish'. They certainly did today!
