Boardsmill advanced to the final of the Meath Cleaning Supplies Junior All County Football Championship Division 6 with a three point win over Moynalvey after extra time in the Semi-Final played at Boardsmill on Saturday afternoon 13th September.

Boardsmill 2-16
Moynalvey 2-13

Despite Moynalvey somehow staging a ten point recovery in the final quarter of normal time to force this semi-final tie to extra time, it was the ‘Mill who eventually won out by three points in this penultimate game of the championship to advance to the final.

Although a somewhat novel pairing of the clubs in recent years, many of the players on both sides were no strangers to each other with Moynalvey and Boardsmill having been joined as an independent side at underage levels in recent years.

First up to trouble the score keeper was the home side with stalwart Vinny Guy opening the scoring. Moynalvey opened their account in the third minute when Barry Walsh capitalized on a quickly taken solo and go to point.

Two minutes later Moynalvey took the lead for the first time when Evan Drum scored a close range free after he had been fouled himself in the process of shooting wide.

Drum went on to add another brace, one from a free and another from play to leave it 0-4 to 0-1 in favour of the men in maroon with eleven minutes played. Boardsmill’s lively full forward Darren McDowell left it double scores when pointing in the 17th minute.

Evan Drum sent over his third free of the game in the 18th minute, but the home side reeled off four unanswered points courtesy of a Keith Hamilton free and points from John Mitchell, Cian Royston and James Durkan to leave them a point up, 0-6 to 0-5, when referee Shane Waters blew the half time whistle.

The home side started the second half in determined fashion, extending their lead to six within six minutes of the restart. First Cathal Wall pointed which was followed by a pair of two pointers, the first from a Keith Hamilton free and the second from Vinny Guy to leave it 0-11 to 0-5, six minutes into the second half.

Half Time Moynalvey substitute Anthony Forde briefly broke the Boardsmill momentum in the 38th minute, but the home side added a further 1-2 in the next seven minutes to hold a commanding ten point lead at the three quarter hour mark, 1-13 to 0-6.

Having looked home and hosed, that Boardsmilll goal proved to be their final score of the second half in the 45th minute.

Up stepped Moynalvey for their somewhat miraculous comeback, kick started by a William Harnan point, followed by points from a Luke O’Halloran free, Aaron Sweeney free and James O’Neill clipping over a beautiful score from an acute angle along the end line to leave it 1-13 to 0-10 with six minutes remaining.

Just three points separated the teams when Luke O’Halloran stepped forward to convert a penalty past Sean Dixon in the 57th minute. The comeback was complete three minutes into added time when a Paul Corcoran shot at goal somehow found it’s way through a sea of Boardsmill legs past Sean Dixon to draw the sides level 1-13 to 2-10 before Shane Waters blew the full time whistle.

Extra time it was after Moynalvey’s comeback.

Luke O’Halloran opened the scoring in the first period of added time in the 7th minute to take the lead for Moynalvey, but that was as good as it got in the first half of extra time for the side in maroon. Boardsmill added points from Cathal wall and a Keith Hamilton ’45, before the ball bobbled around in the Moynalvey danger area for Boardsmill to eventually fortuitously finish it to Anthony Brien’s net to take a four point advantage on the stroke of extra time half time, 2-15 to 2-11.

A William Harnan two pointer thirty seconds into the second half of extra time narrowed the deficit to two, but that proved to be Moynalvey’s final score. Boardsmill added a further point to give them a three point winning margin at full time of extra time, 2-16 to 2-13 to see them advance to the final.
