SFC: Heartbreak for Rathkenny at Navan

Rathkenny who were knocked out of the Fairyhouse Steel, Meath Senior Football Championship when Meath Hill sent over a two pointer with the last kick of the game played in Pairc Tailteann last Sunday afternoon, August 31st.

Rathkenny playing against the strong wind had the better of the opening few minutes, but they kicked 4 wides and had a goal opportunity saved out for a 45 before Keith Curtis sent over on seven minutes to open the scoring. Meath Hill equalised through Gary Breslin a minute later. Rathkenny took control of the scoring when Keith Curtis notched up a goal and two points to put Rathkenny five points up with 16 minutes on the clock. Gary Breslin reduced the arrears with a point on 18 minutes, before Noah Jenkinson sent over a great point with 21 minutes played. Meath Hill then finished the half much stronger to add 1-5 without reply. Gary Breslin adding four points, one a 2 pointer and Jack McMahon adding a point and an all-important goal. Meath Hill led by three at the break, 1-7 to 1-4.

Rathkenny reduced the gap with a 2 pointer from Keith Curtis in the 32nd minute. Breslin replied with a point for Meath Hill with four minutes played in the second half. Rathkenny added five points of their own in the following five minutes, Keith Curtis with a point followed by two 2 pointers and with 39 minutes played Rathkenny led by three. Pierce McGrath reduced the gap to two with 15 minutes left to play. With the clock showing 47 minutes gone, Keith Curtis added another point to bring his personal tally to 1-11 on the day. It was to be Rathkennys last score of the day. The rain that came down in the second half made conditions extremely difficult for ball retention and mistakes were a plenty. Cormac Sheehy sent over a point for Meath Hill on 48 minutes and the gap was down to two. With eight minutes remaining Gary Breslin popped over another point and the gap was down to the minimum. Both teams had chances to add to their tally but with the clock showing one minute to play, Rathkenny had a free. They moved the ball around, but Meath Hill won back possession and with the hooter having sounded moved the ball across the field looking for an opening. They found Cormac Sheehy who shot from outside the 2-point arc, and it went between the posts to break Rathkenny hearts.
