Moynalvey's Ciaran Harnan

A comfortable win over St. Patricks in this Meade Farm Intermediate Football Championship round three game played at Páirc Tailteann on Saturday afternoon August 30th saw Moynalvey progress to the quarter final stage as group A winners.

Moynalvey 2-15
St. Patricks 1-9

With both teams already qualified for the knockout stages prior to throw in, it was Moynalvey who maintained their 100% record with an impressive win over the Stamullen men to top group A.

Prior to throw in a minutes silence was observed in memory of the late Noel Regan, uncle to Moynalvey wing back David Regan who passed away during the week.

A wind assisted first quarter blitz which included three two pointers laid the foundations for Moynalvey’s impressive win.

St. Patricks opened the scoring in the second minute when wing back Oisin Black cut through the Moynalvey defence. Moynalvey’s first score raised an orange flag when Cillian O’Sullivan split the O’Mahonys end uprights from outside the arc.

O’Sullivan then sent over his second score of the afternoon in the 10th minute converting a free after he himself was fouled. Next up it was the turn of another O’Sullivan brother, Mark, who sent over Moynalvey’s second two pointer to leave it 0-5 to 0-1 to the men in maroon with twelve minutes played.

The next four scores went the way of Moynalvey’s top scorer David McLoughlin, a ’45 assisted over the crossbar by the fist of a St. Pats player, a brace of points from play including a two pointer and a free to give Moynalvey a commanding 0-10 to 0-1 lead after 18 minutes.

Two St. Patricks scores in the 22nd and 23rd minute narrowed the deficit to five, firstly a point from Ben Sullivan and then the game’s first goal when Barry Mooney finished to the Moynalvey net from close range, 0-10 to 1-2.

A pair of points from the Moynalvey half back line, first David Regan followed by Michael Brady extended Moynalvey’s advantage back out to seven, 0-12 to 1-2.

Midfielder Shane Dowling fired over St. Patricks third point in the 27th minute, but Moynalvey received the perfect boost before referee Cormac Reilly’s half time whistle when Ciaran Harnan finished past Evan McDonell in the St. Pats’ nets to leave the half time score board read 1-12 to 1-3.

Just as Moynalvey had finished the first half the second half started with a second goal, this time midfielder Craig Gilsenan galloped forward to raise a green flag giving Moynalvey a 2-12 to 1-3 lead.

A David McLoughlin point extended Moynalvey’s advantage to thirteen, before Jamie Murphy sent over a two point free to make it 2-13 to 1-5 eight minutes into the second half.

McLoughlin traded points with Shane Dowling which were followed by another McLoughlin point and a Darragh Branigan point in the 49th minute which would prove to be Moynalvey’s last score of the game.

Chasing the game as they had been from the start St.Patricks added three more points to their tally via a Jamie Murphy ‘45, Shane Dowling and Neil O’Flaherty to leave the full time score 2-15 to 1-9 in favour of Barry O’Keeffe’s charges.

The result means Moynalvey go through unbeaten as group winners with St. Patricks qualifying in second place. Both teams will learn their quarter final fate in Monday night’s draw for the knockout stages.
