Eoghan Nugent battles for possession for O'Mahony's during the All County JFC clash against Dunshaughlin

Navan O’Mahony’s 3-08 Dunshaughlin 3-07

O’Mahony’s made it two from two in the JACFC Div 1 with the narrowest victory over Dunshaughlin in a sunny Paddy O’Brien Park on Saturday evening. Hugh Clarke Carolan led the way, finding the net twice.

Dunshaughlin got off to the better start, converting two frees in the first two minutes. Midfielder Jack Flynn was the first to raise a flag for O’Mahony’s, running through the defence to rattle the net and giving O’Mahony’s the lead. After seven scoreless minutes, Dunshaughlin drew level with a free in the eleventh minute.

A good score from Tiarnán Black put O’Mahony’s in front again. Cormac Nugent won the resulting kickout but was denied a goal by a block from the Dunshaughlin defence, before going on to add a point a few minutes later following a pass from Jack Quinn.

Dunshaughlin added two points from play in the next eight minutes, drawing level with five minutes on the clock before taking the lead two minutes later. With half time approaching, Shane McCarthy dropped a ball into the square where Nugent got a touch but the Dunshaughlin netminder showed impressive reflexes to prevent a goal. A minute later, a goal at the opposite end of the pitch sent the visitors in with a four point advantage at the break.

A quick point from Conor Brady started off the second half, reducing the gap to three. Niall Devlin pulled off an impressive save in the second minute, but two minutes later Dunshaughlin managed a goal to leave it double scores in the visitors favour.

This was to be short-lived however, when Eoghan Nugent flicked a ball into the square for the oncoming Clarke Carolan to finish to the net. Dunshaughlin responded with a point. Five minutes after his goal, Clarke Carolan was blocked down in the square in his attempt for a second. Undeterred, he won the rebound and sent it to the net, making it a one point game again.

Thirteen minutes remained on the clock when Black set up Joyce for a point from play before substitute Rian Porter made his mark with a point to give O’Mahony’s the lead again. A point from Christy Dillon increased the lead. With ten minutes remaining, Dunshaughlin looked set for a score until Brian Hughes Magennis made a good dispossession and with the help of Craig Nolan, delivered the ball to safety.  A second point from Black left three points in it but the drama wasn’t over.

Only a minute remained of normal time when Dunshaughlin found the net for the third time to leave the sides level. McCarthy stood up well for the last couple of minutes, making some impressive catches when O’Mahony’s needed possession. Eoghan Nugent played a key role in the victory, getting his fingertips to a ball to prevent it going over the sideline. The final score came two minutes into injury time when Joyce converted a free, leaving O’Mahony’s single point winners.
