Ciaran Wickham gains possession for O'Mahony's during the Division 5 FL semi final against Dunboyne

Navan O’Mahony’s 0-12 St Peters Dunboyne 2-13

O’Mahony’s lost out to a strong Dunboyne side in the penultimate stage of the Div 5 FL in Dunboyne on Friday evening. The match managed to avoid the downpours which occurred before and afterwards.

Six minutes had elapsed before a score when the hosts found the net, followed by a point two minutes later. Jack Flynn was the first to raise a flag for O’Mahony’s after a good one-two play with Conor Brady. Almost immediately, St Peters found the net again and left O’Mahony’s on the back foot at an early stage.

An impressive score came from Cormac Nugent from play in the fourteenth minute. Two minutes later, the hosts raised the first orange flag of the match. Five points from the home side in the last fifteen minutes was only interrupted by a Nugent free following a breach of the three-back rule in the twentieth minute.

Navan O’Mahony’s 0-3 St Peter’s Dunboyne 2-8

With an eleven point deficit, O’Mahony’s had a lot of ground to make up. The first score of the half came for Dunboyne, and would have been a two pointer only for netminder Niall Devlin got a touch as it went over the bar. Two minutes later, another point saw the lead increase to thirteen.

Five minutes into the half, Paddy Yourell got his name on the score-sheet with a well-taken score. The fortieth minute saw Dunboyne add another score. The final twenty minutes of the game were by far the strongest for the travelling continent. This was started off with a good two-pointer from play from Shane McCarthy and a well-taken score from Flynn.

Louis Collins kicked a point from play but a similar effort from the hosts returned the gap to ten points. Two two-pointers in quick succession from Tiarnán Black and Collins reduced the gap to six, giving O’Mahony’s a brief window where two goals could bring them back level. It wasn’t to be and a fisted point from Dunboyne in injury time was the final score of the match.
