FL Div 1: Gaeils on top in dress rehearsal

July 01, 2025

Ryan Farnham scored a crucial late goal for Gaeil Colmcille in Simonstown

Summerhill 2-12 Gaeil Colmcille 1-16

On Saturday, Gaeil Colmcille and Summerhill played out a dress rehearsal of what will be the opening round fixture for both sides in this years championship and if it serves up to be as entertaining as Saturdays it’ll be a cracker.

The Gaeils did their best to stay in the game best they could and three pointers would be all that they’d score in the opening half as scores were limited and it left them down by two at half-time. Oisin Walsh got the first of the two pointers in the fourth minute but Summerhill blitzed Kells in a seven minute spell that saw them score an unanswered 1-03 to lead by four.

Dan Farrelly responded for Kells with a two pointer in the 12th minute after the wing back found himself at the edge of the arc and his effort floated over the bar. Summerhill added a point but when Seamus Mattimoe got Kells third two pointer of the half to leave just one between the sides with 18 minutes played.

The remainder of the half was a game of cat and mouse with a lot of the game being played around the middle but it would be the home side who would rue missed opportunities as their wides count stacked up. They did get their fifth point of the half at the stroke of the half time whistle to lead 1-05 to 0-06.

The Hill’s lead was cut in half when Mattimoe pointed in the opening 30 seconds of the half. A firm response by the Summerhill side saw them get the next two scores before a Brian Hanlon cut the gap to two points. As Kells tried to stay in the game, from the resulting kickout to Hanlons free, Summerhill went the length of the field and buried the ball to the back of the net to see them lead by 5 points.

A further point was added and it looked like Summerhill were in cruise mode. Credit to Kells they kept plugging away and points from Liam Barry, Mattimoe and Ajay Tormey left just three between the teams right before the champagne moment of the game from a Kells perspective as when Ryan Farnham picked the ball up in his own half, he went on a solo run picking off the Summerhill backs and when he got to the edge of the penalty area rifled the ball to the top corner to draw the teams level.

Even Sheridan finished off the good purple patch for the Gaeils and he hit a monster two pointed to put Kells ahead for the first time since the opening score. With 8 minutes remaining Gaeil Colmcille were well in the game now but just as they thought they were in control Summerhill hit four points in a row to lead by two points as the clock went into the red.

There was still time for one more twist as Barry Farrelly hit Kells fifth two pointer of the game to leave the game all square with time nearly up. Referee Stephen Cregan allowed the kickout and Kells won the break and the ball was worked to Aaron Browne who won it for Gaeil Colmcille at the end in what looked an unlikely victory.

The win for Kells was the fifth in a row in the A League for Conn Clearys men as they now prepare for a last round fixture against Ratoath in Grangegodden.
