A disappointing display by Trim in windswept and drizzly Rathkenny on Saturday (28th June) saw them fall to their first defeat of the season to a lively and hungrier home side on a 2-11 to 1-17 scoreline in the division 2 league. Rathkenny won this match because they refused to give up until the final whistle while Trim appeared to wilt or throw in the towel ten minutes from the end of the match.
Ten minutes from the end Trim had deservedly drawn level with a well taken penalty from Sean Foley and it looked as if they would see out the match with a win as they controlled much of the play for the opening twenty minutes of the second half but it was Rathkenny who pushed on with a flurry of six points from the 23rd minute to which Trim replied with a two pointer in the 30th minute.
However the signs were ominous in the first half when Trim played with the advantage of the hill on the Rathkenny pitch but struggled to contain the lively Rathkenny outfit who made use of the strong breeze to register 0-9, including two two pointers while Trim struggled to score just four times (1-3). Their low score rate was partly due to the fact they had to play 10 minutes of the half with fourteen men when Eoin Sweeney was black carded for a harmless looking free in the 9th minute when the match was evenly poised on 0-1 to 0-1 scoreline.
In that 10 minute period Trim defended well conceding only two points while scoring a goal to leave the scores level in the 20th minute. However, it was Rathkenny that finished the half better with two, two pointers in the 24th and 30th minutes to points from Conor Quigley and Tom Carmody. The latter point was tapped over the bar after a scorching shot from Sean Foley came crashing off the bar leaving the half time score Rathkenny 0-9 Trim 1-3
Trim started the second half well and looked certain to score a goal in the opening minute of the half but David Lernihan was thwarted by the very alert Rathkenny custodian who made a further two point blank saves later in the half when it seemed certain Trim could not miss. The teams swopped points soon after and Trim began to control the game scoring points in the 4th minute (Sean Foley), 7th minute D Lernihan, 8th minute Conor Quigley, 13th minute, a fine long range effort from James Murray and Foley again in the 14th minute after David Lernihan soared into the air to catch the ball one handed before he passed to Foley who finished well.
Trim’s momentum was badly upset a minute later when Rathkenny scored a major after some weak defensive play and followed up with a point in the 17th minute. But Trim battled back and won a penalty when Sean Foley was fouled as he bore down on goal. He calmly slotted the ball home to level the match Rathkenny 1-11 Trim 2-8. Trim edged ahead in the 21st minute with a D Lernihan free and all looked good for another victory but Rathkenny had other ideas as they drew level a minute later and took control of the remainder of the match as they fired over five more points in the remainder of the match to a two pointer from David Lernihan.
This match leaves Trim with plenty to think about as they approach the final stages of the league. The players will be disappointed with the outcome especially as they seemed to be in control at the crucial stage of the match and failed to capitalise on their superiority and allowed their opponents back into the match in the closing stages.
Conor Quigley, James Murray, Ben Holden, Sean Foley, Tom Carmody and Sean Fitzgerald were best for Trim in a below par performance.
Next week is the last match in the league and a win for Trim will see them in the semi-final. It is a home match. Saturday 5th July @ 4pm v St Vincents. Please come out to support the lad.
