FL Div 3: Depleted Kilmainham suffer heavy defeat in Syddan

June 30, 2025

Kilmainham's Mickey Newman

Kilmainham 0-12, Syddan 5-17

Kilmainham were in action for their second match in four days. We travelled to Syddan on Saturday 28th June down a host of regulars due to holidays and injuries. We did manage to get 18 players togged out. Syddan were sitting high in the table in 5th place, while our lads were at the opposite end. It was always going to an uphill task. Syddan started at a quick pace, moving the ball into their dangerous inside forwards at every opportunity. We put together some nice team moves to cut through the Syddan defence, but we weren’t clinical enough a missed our chances. Syddan at the other end were efficient. Two goal chances by Kilmainham were spurned and Syddan went down the other end and duly punished us with two well worked goals of their own to open up a lead. A couple of frees by Mickey Newman kept the scoreboard ticking over. Syddan were winning every break in midfield. Kilmainham just could not seem to win a ball. Syddan’s dominance in this sector had them in complete control with a 9-point lead at half time.

Half-time score: Kilmainham 0-5, Syddan 2-8

A commanding half time lead got even better from the home side. Their first play of the second half resulted in their third goal of the match. A poor off balanced point attempt by a Syddan player somehow went across goals and went in off the back post. From here there was no way back. Kilmainham tried their best to keep going. A good point by Johnny Quinlan and a couple more Mickey Newman frees helped the scoreboard. Syddan kept the scoreboard ticking over. They emptied their bench with each player contributing to a strong performance. They hit two more goals after poor mistakes in the Kilmainham defence to run out convincing winners. This is a match Kilmainham will want to forget in a hurry. A poor day at the office but we will rise again.

It was brilliant to see youngsters Danny Newman and Jake O’ Rourke get some game time in the second half. Thanks to two of our veterans for togging out yesterday to make sure that we fielded a team. Tom Monaghan coming on at the tender age of 46 plus VAT. Brian Black also started in goals. We had to explain the new rules to Brian and explain our kick out strategies but after that he was raring to go. As regards his age? It is impossible to know. He claims to be around the 40-year-old mark but we will need to see his birth cert for proof as many believe that you could add a good few years to that number!!

Our league campaign concludes with a home tie against a resurgent Dunderry side on Friday 4th July at 8pm in Kilmainham. Hopefully, we can get some bodies back and some injuries will clear up as we approach the business end of the year. Thanks to the handful of people that travelled to Syddan to support the team.

Best for Kilmainham were: Harry Newman, Larry Morgan, Stephen Newman and Matthew Mullen.
