Seneschalstown 2-11 Duleek/Bellewstown 1-13
Seneschalstown picked up a crucial victory on the road in Tony Callaghan Park, Duleek on Thursday in this penultimate round game in the Tommy Dowd Oil Football League Division 5. The win not only means that Seneschasltown are guaranteed a relegation play-off spot at the very least, but it also means they have a shot at finishing outside the playoff spot and staying up automatically.
Playing into the breeze towards the new clubhouse the home side started quickly and had three points on the board in the opening four minutes as Seneschalstown looked loose at the back. However, Seneschalstown launched themselves into the game in the fith minute.
After a shot from the dugout side of the pitch was skewed and went up the air. It was landing around the edge of the square and after he competed for it in the air, Jamie Norris picked up the loose ball and tucked it into the bottom left hand corner. Seán Davis, who kicked six points for the third team 24 hours earlier, added to this when he kicked a fine point off the outside of his right foot to edge Seneschalstown in front for the first time.
Duleek levelled matters, but Davis was involved in the next score when he found Bradley Kirwan with a superb pass who chipped over. Two in a row for the hosts edged them ahead again just before the quarter hour mark.
Seneschasltown’s next score was well e=managed and executed, some patient play between the two D’s eventually gave Davis space to kick a fine two pointer. From the kickout Seneschalstown applied lots of pressure on the Duleek defence and forced a turnover and Jamie Norris set Joey Moore in on goal and after checking back onto his right foot he dispatched the ball to the net.
However, despite that boost Seneschalstown handed it back two minutes later when Duleek/Bellewstown got in for a goal of their own. They levelled the game up after 25 minutes with a point.
Seneschalstown though produced another burst before the break. Jamie Norris came around on the loop to kick a booming two pointer before being unlucky to see his toe poked effort from a saved effort on goal to go over the bar as he got to the ball ahead of the keeper.
Despite facing into the breeze, Seneschalstown came out with a pep in their step after break and half time substitute Seán Carey made an immediate impact when he clipped over from close range. Seán Davis added to his first half tally with his first score of the second half with a point in the 37th minute to make it 2-09 to 1-07 but Seneschalstown would go almost 20 minutes without scoring as they home side launched a comeback.
In that period where they kept Seneschasltown scoreless, they reeled off five points on the bounce including a two point free as they looked to have seized all of the momentum.
Seneschalstown’s backs were to the wall but they did dig in and fight for everything and when they broke out of defence via Mattie Cowley with four minutes left, he and Joey Moore combined for Seán Davis to kick his fifth of the evening. Spurred on by that, Seneschalstown went again and Joey Moore found himself in space out to the left of the D’ and he split the posts to put Seneschalstown.
The hosts kicked another point as the clock ticked deep into injury time but Seneschalstown stood firm to hold on for an extremely valuable one point win, their second victory in five days.
