FL Div 1: Mattimoe star as Gaeils down Tones

June 20, 2025

Gaeil Colmcille's Seamus Mattimoe

Gaeil Colmcille 0-19 Wolfe Tones 0-12

Over the past few years Wolfe Tones, have had the last laugh over Gaeil Colmcille with wins in Championship and Leagues and bar a draw in the League two years ago the Kells side hadn’t too much to shout about the the local battle but a strong performance in Grangegodden saw the home side pick up what was referred to as a “Monkey off the back”. The win largely came down to the left boot of Seamus Mattimoe who raised white and orange flags all night to account for 0-11.

Everything seemed to go right in the early exchanges and inside the first five minutes Kells led 0-03 to 0-00 thanks to Mattimoe, a Liam Devine fisted effort and Oisin Reilly. The lead was put to five after Mattimoe added a free and a point from play after a tap and go left the Tones defence flat footed.

With a quarter of the game gone Aaron Browne raised a two point flag and a one point flag in quick succession and Kells led 0-08 to 0-00. D’Tones got their first score in the 17th minute but that didn’t tell the whole story as the Gaeils backs continued to overturn the Wolfe Tones attacks and added into that was an excellent save from Barry Farrelly.

Both sides shared the next two scores but another free from Mattimoe and a point from the edge of the arc for Adam Donnelly put Kells nine points up and the corner back got in on the action. Mattimoe continued his scoring with another point just before the half time and when D’Tones hit a two point free from Caolan Ward it left them trailing by 8 at the break with Kells leading 0-12 to 0-04

Wolfe Tones came out for the second half with a purpose and three points in a row in the opening minute, the 33rd minute and the 36th minute cut the lead to five points as the Kilberry based side held all the early possession. Beano Hanlon stopped the rot with a well struck free and full back Rian Early broke down a high ball in on the Tones keeper and as the ball went loose, Early flicked to Hanlon who pointed to see Kells restore a seven point lead.

Once again Wolfe Tones piled on the pressure and a two pointer from Alan Callaghan after another save from Farrelly moments earlier. Another point saw the lead cut to four and Wolfe Tones were mounting a comeback.

As Wolfe Tones held possession and tried to get an all important goal, courageous defending from the Kells Fullback line saw turnovers from Donnelly and Shane Callaghan while Early made superb block on a Tones shot to ensure no goal would be conceded.

As Kells withheld the threat of a goal, Mattimoe added 2 two-pointers from free kicks in the 52nd and 57th minute to all but seal the game and after Wolfe Tones pointed twice is was fitting that Mattimoe finished the scoring with his 11th of the ninth to see Kells pick up their fourth win in a row and sit 6th in the Divsion 1 table.
