A strong second half performance from the visitors to Paddy O’Brien Park on Thursday evening left them leaving with a convincing win and securing their place at the top of the table.

O’Mahony’s took an early lead with a point from play from Robbie Keelaghan after ninety seconds, with Moynalvey equalising quickly afterwards. Over the next ten minutes, only one flag was raised when Moynalvey took the lead in the ninth minute with a point, coming from a play where a goal shot could also have been an option.

A two-pointer free from Aodhan Mallon swapped the leads again, extended by a point from play by Shane Maguire following a great run through a tackle by Robbie Keelaghan to set him up. Moynalvey brought one back with a point two minutes later and in the nineteenth minute, got the goal that they had been threatening since the start of the game.

The visitors followed this up with points from play over the next five minutes and led by four approaching the interval. On the cusp of half time, Mike O’Reilly was set up by Darragh Maguire and took a good score to leave three between the sides at the break.

The umpires were once again not overly taxed in the opening stages of the second half. Keelaghan reduced the gap to two points after two minutes and this was followed by a scoreless period. The next score came after Maguire made an impressive interception to regain possession and played the ball up the pitch. The play ended with a foul on Craig Munnelly O’Toole and Mallon converted the resulting free.

The next fifteen minute period was dominated by Moynalvey, who put in a solid performance and put the game to bed in this time. Six points in this period were broken only by a goal for the visitors as a result of a high ball into the square. Another goal opportunity was denied by a great block from Darragh Murphy, before Dean Halpin scooped up the breaking ball and cleared it to safety.

Having gone almost twenty minutes with no score, O’Mahony’s kicked three scores in the last few minutes, one of which was a two-pointer from Keelaghan. It wasn’t enough to impact the result however and Moynalvey deservedly claimed the two points on offer, finishing off the scoring with a two-point kick from play.
