Curraha 0-8 Seneschalstown 2-8
Curraha travelled to Fr. Tully Park Seneschalstown on Sunday Morning for the J.M Food Services League Semi-Final.
The match was played in perfect conditions with Seneschalstown pitch in great condition. The last time the 2 sides met on the 6th of April it was Senchelstown who prevailed with a 7 point victory. Curraha had improved immensely since then and earned themselves a place in the last 4. In a rivalry which has grown over the years a massive crowd was in attendance to view the 2 teams and see who would play Dunshaughlin in Wednesday's Final.
Cormac Reilly got the game underway at 10:30am with Curraha shooting towards Seneschalstown second pitch for the first half. The first half was anything but a classic that had been expected with both teams struggling to put any scores together. Senchalstown started the brightest with Eoin Finnegan firing over a free after a minute of action. Curraha found it hard to break down the packed Seneschalstown defence but when they did they nearly got the opening goal of the game when James McEntee's shot was saved off the line and went out for a 45. McEntee took the honors and kicked the ball straight between the posts to level the game after 4 minutes of play. Alan Mulvany got the next point of the game 6 minutes later for Seneschalstown when he got a point from play. Curraha found it hard to break down the Seneschalstown defence with some cynical fouling from Seneschalstown preventing Curraha getting into their groove. Ronan Flynn leveled the game for the second time with a free in the 14th minute with Seneschalstown’s ill discipline costing them once again. Currahas defence did brilliant throughout the first half and were able to withstand the Seneschalstown’s attacks. Eoin Finnegan gave Seneschalstown the lead in the 25th minute with a point from a free. Halftime score read Curraha 0.02 Seneschalstown 0.03
Seneschalstown again started the second half the brightest with Finnegan firing over a point after 40 seconds. Seneschalstown again got the next point coming from play from Alan Mulvany. Seneschalstown introduced Cathal Hickey for the second time in the match with 20 minutes remaining. Curraha responded to Mulvany’s point when Conor Moriarty won a ball on the 45 metre line and turned his man and slotted the ball over the black spot to leave 2 between the sides. Curraha had another goal chance in the 12th minute but Seneschalstown will be thankful of their goalie James Meade when he made a vital interception to prevent Conor Moriarty passing the ball to Diarmuid Moriarty who more than likely would have slotted the ball to the back of an open net. Seneschalstown got the goal Curraha wanted and broke at speed up the pitch and Cathal Hickey slotted the ball to the back of the net. In the 16th minute Hickey kicked a fine 45 to give the home team a 6 point advantage. Jared Roche was introduced for Mark Jackson with 15 minutes remaining for Curraha. Roche immediately made an impact and received the ball on the wing and his fine shot looked to be heading over but dropped short into a dangerous area with Diarmuid Moriarty arriving at the right time and fisted it over the bar. Ronan Flynn brought the deficit back to 4 with an excellent point from play with 12 minutes remaining. Curraha will probably be annoyed that they missed opportunities to level the game. Luke McCarthy produced a fine save in the 20th minute. Unfortunately for Curraha it was a hammer blow for them in the 23rd minute when Cathal Hickey got his and Seneschalstown’s second goal. The Curraha players weren't giving up easily however and some great fielding from their Midfield partnership led to James McEntee converting a point from play to leave 6 between the teams. Finnegan converted a fine point from a free with 3 minutes remaining. James McEntee again responded for Curraha. Cathal Hickey kicked a fine point from play for Seneschalstown in the 30th minute. McEntee responded for Curraha late on but unfortunately it was a consolation point for Curraha. The final whistle sounded and it was Seneschalstown who ran out 6 point winners.
A disappointing result for Curraha but credit to Seneschalstown who were that small bit more sharper over the 60 minutes and were deserving winners. Curraha had a brilliant league campaign and secured 7 fine victories. The Curraha lads have just under 3 weeks of hard training to get everyone match fit and ready for the first Round of the Fairyhouse Steel Meath Senior Championship Round 1 encounter against St. Peter's Dunboyne at 7:30 pm on Friday the 9th of August in Dunshaughlin. Curraha who will be tipped to be in relegation will always be guaranteed of causing an upset in the Championship and can build on a good solid game against Seneschalstown heading into the Championship.
