St. Colmcilles 1-09 Dunderry 1-06
By Liam Walsh
For the sixth time in this league campaign the Cilles fourth team took to road again, this time to visit the league leaders Dunderry.
Based on the successes achieved on the road this year the young Cilles team travelled with confidence knowing that they were facing the form team of the division who had yet to suffer a defeat. Played in balmy conditions on a well prepared pitch there was a cageyness and intensity in the match from the very start.
The Cilles were first to register a score with a point from Ciaran Kelly. A Dunderry point was followed by another Ciaran. The next two points put the home team ahead before Ciaran levelled the match on thirteen minutes. Another Cilles point from Tom Forkin before Dunderry went ahead again with two more points. On twenty six minutes a move which started in the Cilles defence was worked up the field and was finished to the net by Ciaran for the games first goal. A further Cilles point from Ciaran left the half time score at St. Colmcilles 1-05; Dunderry 0-05.
The second half started with another Cilles point from Ciaran. A 45 for Dunderry which was lobbed into the square was finished in the net after ten minutes leaving only a point between the teams. With both sides looking to gain an advantage in the final quarter of the game , it became a very tense affair with not an inch been given by either side. A point from Conor Brennan was answered by Dunderry after twenty four minutes to keep the single score between the teams. The Cilles defence were heroic in dealing with the pressure being applied by the home team to get an equaliser. A point from Ciaran eased the pressure but with the home side needing a goal to win there was no room for error in the Cilles defence. With the match deep into added time another point from Conor gave the Cilles the cushion to see out the game.
At the final whistle the Cilles had moved to the top of the table on a final score of St. Colmcilles 1-09; Dunderry 1-06. It was a victory achieved by hard work and teamwork in what was the most difficult assignment to date in the league. Great credit goes to the lads in their first year out of minor who have excelled during the league and displayed composure under pressure. They were well supported by their experienced teammates. Our final league game is at home when we welcome Bective to Piltown.
