March 11, 2024

Kildalkey's Cameron Smith

Kildalkey 2-9 Kilmessan 1-11

Last years finalists Kildalkey welcomed Kilmessan to Fr Plunkett Park on Sunday morning for this Donal O Lionsigh Cup first round game in wet conditions and hung on for a 1 point win in the finish as Kilmessan pushed hard in a hard fought game.

Kildalkey made a good start with Cian Colhoun hitting 2 long range points either side of a Cameron Smith point from the left wing. Mattie Cully and Ciaran Browne pushed them further ahead but Kilmessan hit 2 frees.

Lee Coldrick pounced for a goal after some good work from Michael O Donnell and Mattie Cully hit the last 2 frees to leave it 1-7 to 0-2 at the break.

Kilmessan introduced a few subs to great affect and put pressure on the hosts hitting the first 4 points before Mattie Cully hit over a free before Stephen Murray popped up for an opportunistic goal on the ground to leave 6 in it 2-8 to 0-8 but Kilmessan weren’t finished and hit back for a goal of their own Cully put his team on 2-9 but Kilmessan closed it to 1 point and after a few hairy minutes of injury time the defence held firm and held on just about for a one point win.

Kildalkey had good displays from Liam Carroll, Aaron Traynor, Kevin Murray, Ross Thompson, Lee Coldrick and the 5 minors from last year who made their adult debut all played well and didn’t look out of place Jamie Kavanagh, Conor McNally, Cameron Smith, Shay Diggins and Mark Hand
