Amy Betson gains possession for O'Mahonys against Walterstown

O'Mahonys 3-04 Walterstown 6-03

On Saturday the 18th of November a large crowd gathered on the Navan O’Mahonys Trim Rd pitch for the highly anticipated Under 14 division 1 championship decider contested between Navan O'Mahonys and Walterstown. Walterstown had already beaten our girls in the league campaign, and we knew it was going to be a tough battle between 2 super teams. It pitted best friends and school friends against each other and for 60 plus minutes friendship was put to one side whilst the outcome of this final was decided.

O’Mahonys played against the breeze in the 1st half and were quick to settle into their stride by scoring 1-01 without reply. Rattled by the O’Mahonys quick start Walterstown soon knuckled down to the task at hand and found their scoring range adding 1-01 of their own to leave the game all square as we entered the final 10 minutes of the 1st half, O’Mahonys then scored their 2nd goal of the half. Walterstown responded with a point of their own and with the last kick of the half converted a free to leave the minimum of 1 point between the teams,

Half time score O'Mahonys 2-01 Walterstown 1-03

As the 2nd half commenced O’Mahonys playing with the aid of the wind were quick into their stride tacking on a point, and a goal in quick succession stretching their lead out to 5 points however Walterstown did not panic and showed all their experience, quickly answering with 2 goals of their own. O Mahony’s answered with a point and this left the game all square as we approached the final third. It was at this stage of the game Walterstown really found their stride and pushed on with another 2 goals to leave them firmly in the driving seat as the game approached the final whistle.  O’Mahonys pushed to try and reduce the deficit but the Walterstown rearguard held firm and broke away to score a final goal to seal victory and the division 1 title.

After the final whistle it was great to see the respect that both teams had for each other, it really was sport at its finest, the Walterstown girls commiserated with their friends from O’Mahonys and the O’Mahonys girls congratulated their friends from Walterstown.

Congratulations to Walterstown and enjoy the celebrations, however these O’Mahonys girls will come back stronger and we will look forward to renewing our rivalry in the new year.
