Josh McKenna celebrates as Killary Emmets find the back of the Trim net during the MFC Division 2 final at Skryne

Killary Emmets 5-9 Trim 1-6

Killary Emmets claimed the Liam Tolan Cup in some style in Skryne on Friday night. The Castletown/Syddan combination produced their best performance of the year when it mattered most. The two teams had met in the early rounds of the championship with the Trim lads coming out on top on that occasion. However on Friday night Killary produced a performance full of skill, power and determination to claim the Division 2 Championship Title. PHOTOS

The game was played in perfect conditions. Killary got the first score on the board in the fifth minute through midfielder Eoghan Dillon. Killary netminder Oisin O'Hare made a brilliant save after three minutes to deny Trim an early goal. Daragh Weldon got his first score after twelve minutes with a nice point off his left from play. The full forward would prove to be a constant thorn in Trims side with an outstanding display. Trim got two points back before the electric Aiden Rennie kicked a monster point from 35 yards out to put Killary back in front. Adam Wogan and Eoghan Dillon were beginning to exert dominance in midfield at this stage with wingbacks Alex Timmons-Sheehy and Sean Mckeown winning breaks and driving forward at every opportunity. On 19 minutes came the games first goal. A Trim kickout was fielded by Aiden Rennie and laid off to playmaker Daniel Moran. Moran spotted Cillian Rafferty who ran at the defence before being dragged down for a penalty. Rafferty expertly dispatched into the bottom corner. Trim responded well and two minutes later got a goal of their own straight from a free. On 22 minutes brilliant work by Rennie and Weldom led to dispossession inside the Trim 14 yard line. Weldon expertly finished into the top corner. Things got even better for Killary on 29 minutes. From their own 14 yard line a move involving Eoghan Dillon ran up the middle with the ball before finding Shane Donohue. Donohue put the onrushing Rennie in on goal.  His shot was parried and fell to Weldon who made no mistake. At half time Killary led 3-3 to Trims 1-3.

The second half started with Wogan winning the throw up and laying off to Dillon who's punt up the field deceived the Trim defence and finished in the net. A dream start to the second half for Killary. Shane Donogue got a brilliant point in a fine move started by a kickout from Oisin O'Hare. An outstanding point from Weldon when he took on the entire Trim defence had Killary well in front by this stage. Trim could not break down the outstanding full back line of Conall Sheridan, Patrick Balfe and Lee Hickey who made block after block to preserve Killarys lead. Josh Curtis at centre back led the back line magnificently with Timmons-Sheehy reading the game expertly throughout. The game ended as a contest when a brillaint dispossession by Josh Mckenna put Cillian Rafferty through. Rafferty laid it back to Mckenna who finished to the net after his first effort hit the woodwork. Another fine by point by Weldon increased the lead further. Rennie got other point from the resultant kickout after a driving run through the defence. Sean Mckeown got the point that his performance deserved to complete the scoring for Killary.

The full time whistle blew with the score 5-9 to 1-6 in Killarys favour to spark jubilant celebrations amongst players and supporters. Captains Eoghan Dillon and Adam Wogan accepted the cup on behalf of the team. A brilliant team performance by the players. Commiserations to Trim who can still proud of their year. Overall a great achievement for Killary in a highly competitive championship grade. Well done to all involved.

A big thank you to Skyrne GFC for their excellent organisation and facilities on the night.
