Premier Div 2 final: Hill deny Tones at Brews Hill

October 07, 2023

The Wolfe Tones squad that reached the premier Division 2 final

Bhulf Tón 1-9 Summerhill 3-9 in Paddy O Brien Park

Bhi tús maith ag Bhulf Tón agus bhíodar 0 03 in aghaidh 0 01 chun tosaigh go luath sa chluiche, ach ligeadar isteach dha chúl roimh leatham. Cé go raibh siad cúig chuilini chun deiridh rinne siad an iarracht sa dara leath le cabhair cúl ó Sean Kendall a d’fhag dha chuilin eatarthu ach nior éirigh leo an bhearna a laghdú as sin amach.

Tones opened brightly and were 0-3 to 0-1 ahead thanks to points from Aaron Tolan and Kyle Moran (2) before conceding a goal against the run of play when a high ball which dropped in the square was finished to the net. Summerhill added two further points from a free and a’45 before  Joe Smith added a point from a free to steady the ship. Summerhill added a point to leave a goal between the teams. Tones suffered a body blow shortly afterwards when playing the ball out from the back as possession was lost with the ball finishing in the net. To their credit Tones rallied with Joe Smith adding two further points to leave the half time score Bhulf Ton 0 06 Summerhill 2 05.

What followed was a very exciting second half as Tones attempted to claw back the deficit. Although they conceded a point straight after the interval they gave themselves a lifeline with a determined effort all round. With Alan Mc Keever and Sean Moriarty showing up to good effect in defence Tones were managing to hold on. Kyle Moran added a point before a Tones sweeping move led to a double save. Joe Smith’s sublime pass found Aaron Tolan who fed Eanna Harrington whose shot was saved.  In the ensuing scramble following a second save Sean Kendall poked the ball to the net to leave the score Bhulf Tón 1 07 Summerhill 2 06. Unfortunately for Tones, Summerhill netted from the kick out. Tones would have to do it all again.  Even though they fell two points further adrift they refused to yield and created a couple of goal chances. The best fell to Ben Reilly who outpaced the Summerhill defence only to see his shot well saved. Reilly and Joe Smith added a point each. Tones now trailing by five eschewed two possible point chances looking for goals which didn’t materialise. At the other end there was exciting action also as Summerhill looked to exploit gaps in the Tones defence, with Daniel Mc Hugh and Sean Moriarty saving what seemed certain goals. Tones couldn’t find the scores they needed against a well marshalled ‘hill defence but played with great spirit right to the final whistle.

This match brought down the curtain on Tones’ football season which saw them also reach the Keegan Cup semi final.
