Navan O’Mahony’s 3-05 Wolfe Tones 2-13
Navan O’Mahony’s lost out to Wolfe Tones in the semi final of the Premier 2 FC Semi Final on Saturday evening. The game was played in Gibbstown in good conditions, before the arrival of storm Nigel.
It was a slow start to the match, with neither side managing to break through for a score in the early stages. Wolfe Tones kicked a number of wides in this time while the visitors dropped a number of balls short. The first score came on the ten-minute mark from the Wolfe Tones. This didn’t really get the ball rolling, as on the midway mark, there was still only one point on the scoreboard, although the home side added another shortly afterwards.
In the sixteenth minute, Craig Munnelly O’Toole opened the scoring for Navan O’Mahony’s with a well-taken point, followed quickly by a Wolfe Tones point. Navan O’Mahony’s second point came when Henry Finnegan won a Wolfe Tones kickout, and picked out Clayton O’Sullivan who duly split the posts.
Wolfe Tones added another point before Navan O’Mahony’s came into their best period of the match. A goal from play from Jack Quinn was followed within sixty seconds by a goal from Jack Flynn to give Navan O’Mahony’s the lead. An injury time point from Munnelly O’Toole left five points between the sides at the break.

The home side were quick off the mark in the second half, reducing the deficit to a point within ninety seconds of the throw in with a goal and a point. At the opposite end of the pitch, a high ball in was won by Finnegan who found the net. This was nullified by a Wolfe Tones goal at the other end of the field within a minute, leaving a point in it again.
O’Sullivan pointed from a free to leave two in it. Wolfe Tones then enjoyed their period of dominance, kicking six points from play in a ten minute period, putting themselves in the lead.
Four points behind, Navan O’Mahony’s were very much chasing the game with ten minutes to go and needed a goal. Try as they might, they couldn’t get it. With four points in it, a point was needed as well and this came in the form of an O’Sullivan free.
The gap was reduced to three but instead of the goal that Navan O’Mahony’s needed, the scores came at the opposite end of the pitch. The home side added two points in the closing minutes, leaving five points between the sides and progress to the final. Best of luck to Wolfe Tones in the final.
