Jun B FC Group A: 'Wood' top group and advance to last four

Kilmainhamwood's Eoin Finnegan

Kilmainhamwood 3-12 Drumconrath 0-10

2009 a year when Barack Obama was inaugurated to the White House, Michael Jackson died and swine flu thankfully did not bring the globe to a halt. It was also the last time that Kilmainhamwood qualified from their group in a championship, as they went onto be defeated by Oldcastle in that years intermediate final.

This win over Drumconrath means Kilmainhamwood top their group and will be in a semi final.

The Wood did not have it all their own way in the first half as they were playing against a strong wind and kicked multiple balls short and wide as they struggled to find their range. Meanwhile Daniel Byrne was deadly accurate from frees and the Drums lead by 4 points to 1 after ten minutes with the Woods only score coming from Eoin Finnegans close range point. Niall Bennett then got things rolling with a high shot which just snuck over the crossbar. The Wood started to get their forward movement going and Eoin Finnegan and Niall Conlon were fouled multiple times for the Wood to kick 4 consecutive frees, three from Rian Stafford and one from Stephen Kiernan. Stafford then scored a good point from play before the decisive score in the match came. Cathal Bennett fought hard to keep the ball at full forward as three men tackled him. He did a one-two with Micheal Shankey before passing to the onrushing Stafford, who burried it low in the corner for a goal. The Drums kicked the final score of the half, but with a 1-7 to 5 lead for the Wood, and playing with the breeze in the second half meant that the game was largely finished as a contest.

The Wood started strong in the second half with a Kiernan and Stafford frees before Cian Gillespie bundled the ball home from close range after a good pass from Finnegan. Stafford kicked another two good scores before Kiernan rattled the net again with an excellent low shot.

The game was over at this stage, but to Drumcondraths credit, they kicked some good frees for the rest of the game. Eoin Rooney kicked one more good score for the Wood.

Kilmainhamwood GFC would like to wish Keith Byrne a speedy recovery after a very serious injury he suffered during the game. We hope he has a long and healthy career and he will be back in no time.
