JFC Group A: Second loss for Kilmainham

August 26, 2023

Kilmainham's Mickey Newman

Kilmainham 0-5, St. Brigid's 3-7

Kilmainham faced St. Brigid’s in an immaculate Moynalty venue on Friday 25th August. Both teams needed to win. As is the case in all grades of championship this year, one minute you could be heading for a quarter final place and the next you are heading for relegation. Matches and groups are very tight as expected. This match was expected to be a tight affair and lived up to that in the first half. The game started at a quick pace with both sides guilty of some poor finishing. St. Brigid’s had the better chances while Kilmainham dominated the majority of possession but being were wasteful with it in the forward line. Scores were proven hard to come by for both sides. A red card for one of the St. Brigid’s players after an altercation with Declan Mullen was a turning point in a tight first half. Neither team can blame the excellent playing surface in Moynalty for the low scoring first half.

Half time score: Kilmainham 0-2, St. Vincent’s 0-2

The second half started as expected with an explosive pace. Kilmainham looking to make better use of their extra man, while St. Brigid’s dropping men back and looking to hit on the counter. St. Brigid’s nearly had the ball in the Kilmainham net straight from the whistle only for a last-minute block on the line. Scores were still very hard to come by. A five-minute spell of madness from Kilmainham ultimately cost them this match. Two poor mistakes in the back line resulted in St. Brigid’s punishing us and scoring 2 goals to push their noses in front. Kilmainham then lost talisman Mickey Newman who was struggling all match with an injury going into this game. St. Brigid’s got great confidence from the mistakes and kept pushing to secure more vital scores as the match opened up. A third goal followed as Kilmainham were reduced to fourteen men as Jamie O’ Sullivan saw red for a high challenge. Kilmainham will be bitterly disappointed that they did not make better use of the extra man early on in the game but can have no complaints about the final result. St. Brigid’s ran out deserving winners. That is three wins from three games for them. For Kilmainham it is a second loss after their opening round draw.

We face Moylagh in our last group match on Saturday 9th September at 6pm in Carnaross. A massive match for both clubs.

A special mention to Moynalty GFC for their kind hospitality and excellent facilities on the night. Their pitch was in immaculate condition.
