JFC Group A: Disappointing loss for Kilmainham

August 14, 2023

Kilmainham's Mickey Newman

Kilmainham 1-9, St. Vincent’s 2-15

Kilmainham were looking to building on their lacklustre draw in round two as they took on St. Vincent’s in Walterstown on Saturday 12th August. Both teams needed to win. St. Vincent’s had lost their opening two matches while our lads had only one point on the board from our opening draw against Ballinlough. St. Vincent’s were the more aggressive side and they tackled ferociously as they turned us over on numerous occasions in the first half. Even though they were the better team in the early stages a well worked Conor Kilgallen goal kept us right in it as we approached half time. Very poor defending from our lads let Conor Harford walk through our defence as he played numerous one two’s before palming the palm to an empty net to hit us with a sucker punch as we hit half time.

Half time score:  Kilmainham 1-5, St. Vincent’s 2-6

Some stern words were needed at half time by our management team as they looked to get our lads going. Despite the poor opening half there was still only four points in it. We were looking for a reaction in the second half, but unfortunately, we never got it. Mistake after mistake followed with St. Vincent’s dominating all over the field. Kilmainham made changes, introduced subs but nothing seemed to go right on the night. St. Vincent’s ran out convincing winners to reignite their championship aspirations in what is turning into a really tight group as expected. A lot of soul searching is needed in Kilmainham after this harrowing defeat. We are a far better team than we showed last night, and we need to pick ourselves up for our next match against high flying St. Brigid’s on Friday 25th August at 7.30pm in Moynalty.

Walterstown must be commended on their excellent club facilities for our match. Their lovely scoreboard and funky tunes being a highlight on an otherwise forgetful night for the club.
