Kilmainhamwood 3-8 Cortown 1-10
Kilmainhamwood got a hard fought win over Cortown to make it three wins from three in the championship so far. The game had multiple lead changes and could have went either way.
The Wood started off the strongest as a Rian Stafford point got them underway. Cortown equalised but a great run and score from Ciaran Doyle put the Wood back in front. The Wood missed two goal chances before Cortown hit back with two points. A good pass from Niall Bennett led to a cool finish from Gary Yorke to register the first goal of the game. The Wood then registered the next three scores with two long range frees from Stafford and a beautiful curling effort from Jack Gilespie which gave the Wood a six point and commanding lead. Cortown however did not lie down and their forwards looked dangerous. They registered 1-2 without reply as a David Rispin penalty was followed by two other good scores. Gary Yorke registered the last point of the half and the Wood led by two points at the break. However the Wood felt unhappy as they believed the lead should have been much larger.
Oisin Reilly came on for Shankey at half time, while Killian Russell replaced Ciaran Doyle shortly after. Both substitutes deserve massive credit for overcoming major injuries during the season.
Cortown dominated the early exchanges of the half and kicked three points to take the lead. Two Rian Stafford frees put the Wood a point in front. Cortown then began to dominate. They kicked three incredible scores in a row including one from the left side of the field which David Clifford would have been proud off. At the end of normal time Cortown were two points up and look dominant. The game then changed. Richard Corbally rose highest to win a ball passed into the Cortown forward line. He passed it to Brian Cassidy who gave it to Niall Conlon. Conlon jinked by two players and took a great shot which looked to be creeping over the bar. The Cortown keeper reached above the goals to palm it out, but Niall Bennett was quickest to react and palmed it into the net. The Wood were ecstatic but the referee stated there was still five minutes remaining.
The Wood got a turnover on the next Cortown possession and decided to keep the ball. As Cortown pushed up Killian Russell and Niall Conlon worked the ball beyond the press. Eoin Finnegan had a point at his mercy but passed to Jack Gillespie who was free in the penalty area. Jack burried it top corner to finish the game off.
The result leaves the Wood top of the table but still with two difficult games left in the group.
Best for the Wood were Padraic Barber and Brian Cassidy in defense. While Rian Stafford and Jack Gillespie were on form in the forward line.
