Tributes paid to Sean McCormack

The late Sean McCormack

Trbutes were paid to former Meath All-Ireland winning goalkeeper Sean McCormack who passed away recently at last night’s county committee meeting.

Brendan Cummins said the Kilmainhamwood native had the distinction of playing in four All-Ireland finals. He lined out at corner back in the 1962 All-Ireland junior winning team when Cavan were defeated in the home final and then London in the final proper.

He was goalkeeper in 1966 when Meath reached the All-Ireland Senior decider only to be beaten by Galway who were completing a three-in-a-row. Meath made it back to the final the following year and this time they were successful, defeating Cork to win the Sam Maguire Cup for only the third time.

Sean McCormack was one of the stars of that team and the following year he was part of the groundbreaking tour to Australia.

McCormack’s forth final appearance was in 1970 when the Royals lost to Kerry. In his three senior final appearances Sean McCormack represented three different clubs, Kilmainhamwood in 1966, Nobber in 1967 and Kingscourt in 1970.

As well as an outstanding footballer in his day Sean was a great man for the GAA Scor competition and Irish ballads.

Sympathy was extended to the McCormack family on their great loss.

Former Cork duel star Teddy McCarthy who died suddenly last week was also remembered and sympathy was extended to his family.
