Premier Div 8: Convincing win for Kilmainhamwood

Kilmainhamwood's Andy Farrelly

Kilmainhamwood 2-17 Cortown 1-8

Kilmainhamwood ended up convincing winners over Cortown in the division 8 premier division on Sunday morning, but the first half felt far from one sided.

Ryan Gillespie started well for the Wood kicking the first two scores. Having a strong wind at their back Cortown dominated the next 15 minutes and kicked five scores without reply. However two good scores by Cathal Bennett and Micheal Shankey reduced the deficit to just one point. Both sides traded scores for the remainder of the half with Eoin Finnegan and Ryan Gillespie scoring for the Wood. Cortown wasted two late goal chances in the half. The first was a tame shot by their full forward, which in a scene reminiscent of Father Ted's over 75 soccer match, Shane Russell was able to stumble across the goal line before slowly raising his foot to kick it wide. The second was kicked wide from close range after some good scramble defending by the Wood.

The second half was one sided, as the Wood took full advantage of the strong wind, with points from Harry Corbally, Cathal Bennett and 3 from Eoin Finnegan, before Finnegan scored a superb goal as he buried it from well outside the box into the top corner. This ended the game as a contest, but their were further good scores from Corbally, Gillespie and Finnegan as well as a well worked goal by Alan Carolan after a good pass from Callum Crosbie.

Cortown got a late cancellation goal, but the contest was well and truly over.

Best for the Wood was, Andy Farrelly and Richard Corbally in defence, while Eoin Finnegan and Ryan Gillespie were best for the Wood in attack.
