Navan O’Mahony’s 2-09 St Peters Dunboyne 2-06

Navan O’Mahony’s put in a strong team performance on the Trim Road on Friday evening to overcome St Peters Dunboyne in the final of the Minor Hurling Cup Group B Competition. Behind at half time, the lads dug deep in the second half.

After a wide apiece, Navan O’Mahony’s got the scoring started with a long-distance goal from play from Lorcan McDermott in the fifth minute. Three minutes later, Colin Scanlon pointed from play to put four between the sides. A St Peters Dunboyne free opened their scorecard but it was soon nullified by a point from Sean Finnegan.

The visitors, trailing by four points, soon drew things level with a goal and a point in quick succession in the thirteenth minute. A quiet ten minutes followed until Dean Walsh put David Brady’s side ahead again. This wasn’t to last however, and three St Peters Dunboyne points in the last five minutes gave them the advantage at the interval..

The Brews Hill outfit responded well in the second half, and opened the scoring within 40 seconds of the resumption with a point from Walsh. A goal from St Peters Dunboyne once again left four points between the sides and Navan O’Mahony’s chasing the game.

The home side kept chipping away at the scoreboard, starting with a Sean Davis free. Four wides followed before Ivo Fitzherbert, who had been introduced at the interval, steadied the ship. It took two points in the next thirteen minutes, both from Davis, for the sides to be drawn level again and with five minutes to go it was anyone’s game, albeit with the momentum in favour of Navan O’Mahony’s.

In the twenty-seventh minute, Davis found the net leaving Navan O’Mahony’s in control in the closing minutes. In spite of a resurgence from St Peters Dunboyne and a free on the cusp of normal time, it wasn’t enough. Hugh Clarke Carolan split the posts in injury time for the final score of the game and Navan O’Mahony’s had three points to spare.
