In heavy underfoot conditions Simonstown Gaels led by 0 06 to 0 04 at half time having made the most of their scoring opportunities with several well taken points from distance while they were solid in defence. The visitors just about deserved the half time lead and they could thank their keeper Robbie Burlingham who made a fine save from Cian Ward’s goal effort. Joe Smith pounced on the rebound but unfortunately his fisted effort was held up in the water which had gathered in the goalmouth after the earlier heavy rain. Tones lost keeper Ciaran O Gallchoir early in the game along with Éanna O Kelly Lynch, both to injury with the youthful Daniel Mc Hugh and the experienced Gary Mc Fadden coming in to make handsome contributions.
Tones conceded a point in the opening minutes of the second half in what was the visitors final score. The home side subsequently played with greater urgency and In the 40th minute the complexion of the game altered dramatically. Simonstown’s Shane Barry was dismissed on a second yellow card. The resultant free was a point attempt which dropped short. Unfortunately for the Simonstown keeper as he gathered the ball, it was knocked from his hands straight to the net by Cian Ward to level the game at 1 04 to 0 07. Tones hit three wides over the following ten minutes as they largely controlled the game but struggled to make it count on the scoreboard. A goal and a point in two minutes eased the pressure. The first score came from a Cian Ward free after Sean Penny had been fouled as he bore down on goals. Almost immediately Ward intercepted a short kickout and soccer style chipped the keeper to push the margin out to 2 05 to 0 07. In the closing minutes the home side added 1 02. The goal was well finished by Kyle Moran as he gathered a Cian Ward pass over the last defender.
This was a very good team performance in greasy underfoot conditions given the recent heavy rain. Eanna Harrington, Alan Lynam Dan O Neill and Shane Glynn gave dominant performances in defence with Sean Penny’s and Conor Sheppard’s pace asking plenty of questions of the visitors. Tones were boosted by the return of Oisin Martin after injury and both his teammates in the half forward line Saran O Fionnagain and Caolan Ward gave solid performances. Up front Cian ward took the scoring honours with good performances from Joe Smith and substitute Kyle Moran.
