Leo Murphy Cup: Royals leave it late to earn a share of the spoils

Brian O'Reilly gains possession for Meath during the opening round of the Leo Murphy Cup against Tyrone at Ashbourne

Meath 1-9 Tyrone 0-12

Meath Under 20 footballers staged a late late show to earn a draw with All Ireland champions Tyrone in the opening round of the Leo Murphy Cup played in ideal conditions at Ashbourne.

John McCarthy’s men led at the break 1-4 to 0-6. Liam Stafford opened the scoring for the home side. The visitors replied with two points before Eoghan Frayne scored the games only goal. Brian O'halloran and Frayne (2) completed Meath’s first half tally.

Frayne extended Meath’s lead early in the second half with two well worked points but for the next twenty minutes Tyrone outscored the Royals 0-6 to 0-1 to open up a two point lead. 

Meath refused to give in and points from Ruairi Kinsella and substitute Tom Bowden left the teams level at the finish.

The very impressive Ruairí Canavan kicked eight points for Tyrone.
